Apple?s November iPhone 4S launch led to 83 percent increase in app downloads over 2010 (Appolicious)

After releasing the iPhone 4S in November, Apple and its iTunes App Store saw a big jump in app downloads, rising 83 percent over the same period in 2010.

TechCrunch has the report, which states that app market research firm Fiksu measured the volume of app downloads for the top 200 free apps in the iTunes App Store. Fiksu found volume across all those apps increased by 15 percent from October 2011 to November 2011, and also saw that for the first time, free app downloads broke the 5 million-per-day mark, rising as high as 5.65 million downloads per day in November. October?s record high mark was 4.91 million downloads.

App downloads had been on the decline since around June, as GigaOM reports, in a trend attributed to iPhone owners waiting for the iPhone 4S to hit store shelves. Apple saw a similar decline in iPhone sales in the space between the device?s traditional launch window in the summer and the iPhone 4S? fall launch.

The new iPhone has been extremely popular to date in lots of different markets. Predictions have Apple selling 30 million more iPhones in the last quarter of 2011 than previously expected. Apple has been expanding extensively in places like China and South America to bring the iPhone to new customers, and as one might expect, when those new customers get a shiny new iPhone, they immediately download a lot of new apps.

Fiksu also put some of the blame for the spike in app downloads on the latest version of Apple?s iOS mobile operating system, iOS 5. Apple released the software just ahead of the iPhone 4S and it added a lot of new features, both for the new device and for existing iPhone versions. As a result, developers pushed a number of new updates for their apps during the same period, to add in new functionality like iCloud support. Many apps, especially games, were optimized to take advantage of the powerful new iPhone 4S, and as a result, lots of apps likely saw increases in popularity and a revival in downloads after the new OS?s launch.

As TechCrunch points out, the download spike shows that there?s still a whole lot of room to expand in the smartphone market. Among cellular phone owners in the U.S., smartphones account for only about 50 percent.?That's a high number on its own, but also remarkable because that means there?s the entire other half of the cell phone market that doesn?t have a smartphone but could, and would also be downloading apps but isn?t. The iPhone 4S likely converted quite a few of those feature phone owners, but the market is still pretty young and there?s huge room for growth.

Anti-coal protesters in China targeted by riot police

Published Date: 27-12-2011

At least two people were allegedly killed, and many injured, in China when police tried to disperse around 30,000 citizens protesting against the construction of a coal-fired power plant in the southern town of Haimen.

Despite arrests - and a promise by the local government to suspend the plant's construction - on Friday the protest entered its fourth day.

Riot police fire teargas to disperse protesters in China

Reuters

23 December 2011

Hong Kong - Chinese riot police fired teargas to disperse a throng of protesters in a small town in southern China on Friday, the fourth day of demonstrations against the construction of a power station.

Footage from Hong Kong's Cable TV showed police firing several rounds of teargas in Haimen town, in the southern boom province of Guangdong, sending hundreds of people scuttling away.

The protests in Haimen intensified this week just as people about 130 km (80 miles) further along the coast, in Wukan village, called off a 10-day blockade of their village in a protest against what they said was a land grab by officials.

Protests in China have become relatively common over issues such as corruption, pollution, wages, and land grabs that local-level officials justify in the name of development.

Chinese experts put the number of "mass incidents", as such protests are known, at about 90,000 a year in recent years.

While Communist Party rule is not directly threatened by such incidents of unrest, officials fear they could coalesce into broader, more organised challenges to their power.

Residents of Haimen, a coastal town of about 120,000 people, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against plans to build a coal-fired power plant after what they complain has been years of heavy air and water pollution from existing power plants in the town.

They rejected an offer to suspend the project late on Wednesday, demanding it be scrapped altogether, and Hong Kong's Mingpao newspaper reported on Friday that they pledged to keep up their action if police did not release detained protesters.

China's state news agency Xinhua had reported that police had detained five people for vandalism on Wednesday evening.

People in China are increasingly unwilling to accept the relentless speed of urbanisation and industrialisation and the impact on the environment and health.

China police arrest protesters in south: witnesses

AFP

22 December 2011

HAIMEN, China - Police have begun arresting protesters in southern China after two days of violent clashes, witnesses said Thursday, as the local government warned against further "illegal" demonstrations.

Plainclothes police on Thursday arrested at least three people in Haimen, a town in Guangdong province where residents have been protesting against the expansion of a power plant they say is damaging their health, witnesses said.

"There are lots of plainclothes police officers on the street and the government has started to arrest people," a resident surnamed Zheng told AFP by telephone from Haimen.

"We don't dare go outside, but I heard a small group of people will still go to the highway today," he said, referring to the road where witnesses said police fired tear gas and beat demonstrators on Tuesday and Wednesday.

An AFP reporter in Haimen said the town was calm on Thursday. A large group of residents had gathered at a service station near the highway that was the scene of violent clashes on Wednesday, but they were not protesting.

Despite official efforts to block news of the unrest, residents posted warnings on weibo -- the Chinese version of Twitter -- telling demonstrators not to return to the highway because it was too dangerous.

"Martial law is in effect in the area around Deshengmen. The arrests have started. Please avoid coming here. Serious warning!," a web user said.

A witness to the Wednesday riots told AFP he saw protesters throwing rocks at police who responded by firing tear gas.

"Young men were throwing stones at the police from a long distance, about 200 metres, when the tear gas came over and over. We were all crying," he said by telephone.

Hong Kong media showed photographs from Wednesday of a police officer with a bloody head injury and an overturned police car surrounded by bricks.

The government of Shantou, which oversees Haimen, said the highway would reopen later Thursday and warned that detained protesters would be held accountable if the "illegal" demonstrations continued, state television reported.

Witnesses told AFP on Tuesday that a 15-year-old boy and a middle-aged woman had been killed in the clashes with police, although this could not be independently confirmed.

Oriental TV, a Hong Kong-based television station, said six residents had died and nearly 200 were injured in Tuesday's violent confrontation, which led local authorities to announce the suspension of a plan to expand the plant.

Local government officials declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

Tear gas fired at protesters in China seas

9 News

23 December 2011

Riot police in a southern Chinese coastal town have fired tear gas at protesters on the fourth day of unrest over a planned power plant expansion, according to a demonstrator's account and television footage.

A crowd of protesters were locked in a stand-off with police near the entrance to a highway in the town of Haimen on Friday, demanding that authorities release an unknown number of demonstrators, a man surnamed Lin told The Associated Press.

Police fired tear gas at the protesters, who were gathered quietly a few hundred metres from the highway entrance, Lin said.

"When they saw that more and more people had come to protest, they fired the tear gas to try to chase us away," Lin said.

"At the same time, a big gust of wind blew toward us, so we all had to run. My tears ran continuously. Our eyes are all red."

This is the third time police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in Haimen this week.

"We have no weapons at all - all we are doing is standing here and protesting," Lin said.

Hong Kong's Cable TV showed footage of tear-gas clouds being blown towards protesters, scattering the crowd of hundreds of people.

Riot police with helmets and shields had formed a blockade at the entrance to the highway.

Police have detained five people for vandalism during the protests, the official Xinhua News Agency said on Thursday.

The protesters are concerned that an existing coal-fired power plant has contributed to what they say is a rise in cancer cases and heavy pollution in the seas, a serious problem for a town where fishing is a source of livelihood.

In response to the protests, the local government said on Tuesday it would temporarily suspend the power-plant project, Xinhua said.

But protesters say they have not heard directly from authorities on the matter.

The protesters were also angered by rumours that one or two young demonstrators had died in clashes with police, but Xinhua cited a local Communist Party official as saying that no deaths had occurred.

After three decades of laxly regulated industrialisation, China is seeing a surge in protests over such environmental worries.

For Gingrich, it's a struggle to stay on message

(AP) ? As he scrambles to stop a slide in Iowa, Newt Gingrich's strategy amounts to this: hammer home a message about jobs and the economy while wrapping himself in the mantle of Ronald Reagan. But the loquacious former House speaker keeps struggling to stay on message.

On a 22-stop bus tour of Iowa, Gingrich finds himself unloading on his GOP rivals and reviving talk of a Greek cruise that nearly sank his campaign earlier this year. He fields questions about his work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac, ethics allegations and whether his three marriages make him a polygamist.

The economy? Jobs? Those issues sometimes have been lost in the mix.

"It's been wild and woolly," Gingrich acknowledged to a voter as his wife, Callista, collected a double cappuccino at a Sioux City coffee shop.

If there was ever a time when Gingrich has needed the discipline he's long lacked, it's probably now, as polls show his support tumbling in Iowa in the wake of a storm of ads assailing him as a Washington insider who used his influence to line his pockets.

He now trails rivals Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in Iowa and even if he does manage to score in the top three in Tuesday's caucuses, he doesn't have the money or the organization at this point that those two opponents do as they prepare to go the distance in the state-by-state march to the GOP nomination.

Gingrich argues that his economic pitch is the key to victory, and he doubled down on it Thursday ?or at least tried to.

He appeared in Storm Lake with noted Reagan economist Art Laffer, who praised Gingrich as "far and away the best person to bring this county back to prosperity." Gingrich outlined his tax-cutting economic proposal and implied he was the heir to Reagan's supply-side vision. But he also strayed into long-winded digressions on the federal government's regulation of particulate matter load and conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.

His trademark spray of ideas leaves some voters impressed ? but overwhelmed.

"He has so many," said Ruth Lawlor, 76, who came to hear Gingrich speak at a chocolate store in Algona this week. "It's hard to keep track."

Gingrich's predilection to go for the jugular also has tripped him up, earning his self-described "positive" campaign headlines that he didn't want.

In an interview on CNN this week, Gingrich took the bait.

He not only blasted Romney and Paul but used some of the most incendiary language of the campaign so far. Romney wasn't "man enough" to own up to the negative attacks launched at Gingrich. And Paul was "totally outside the mainstream of every decent American."

Just days later, Gingrich seemed to be suffering from selective amnesia.

"The strategy of focusing on jobs and economic growth, staying positive and being pretty relentless in answering questions at every meeting is working," he said Thursday.

At his campaign events, Gingrich encourages his audiences to fire away with questions about allegations made in attack ads.

In recent days, he's been asked about an ethics fine he paid as speaker and his work for Freddie Mac.

"I don't understand numbers with all those zeros," said a man in Thursday's crowd, referring to the $1.6 million Gingrich's company earned from Freddie Mac.

Gingrich explained that he didn't take in all that money himself and that he fought to increase regulations and not increase funding for the government-sponsored entity.

The candidate argues that such forums give him an opportunity to set the record straight on issues that have been distorted. But they also dredge up the controversies, even as he seeks to put them behind him.

One example came in a telephone town hall meeting Wednesday night when a caller likened Gingrich's three marriages to polygamy.

"Jesus very specifically states in the Bible that divorced people are really still married, which I think technically means now that you're a polygamist, and I'm wondering what you'll do to legalize polygamy in the U.S. if you were to be elected president," the man said.

Gingrich labeled the question "fairly unusual" and said he would oppose any effort to legalize polygamy.

The former Georgia congressman acknowledges his tendency to stray off script.

At Mabe's Pizza in Decorah he was asked why his Republican rivals have been so eager to embrace government intervention in the economy.

He paused and an impish smile crept across his face.

"I'll just get in trouble," he said.

iPod touch vs. Galaxy Player 5.0 ? Part 1: Screen, Hardware, and Aesthetics

Up to this point, there has not really been a direct competitor to the iPod touch. Since its original release in 2007, it has continued to dominate the portable music market with millions sold worldwide. Despite Jobs saying that the it was training wheels for the iPhone, the iPod touch has really grown into its own. Recently it has stepped out of the shadow of the iPhone and moved beyond the iPod line. Users can listen to music, watch movies, and play their favorite games anywhere. Not many other devices do this. Most tech companies have basically decided that this is lost territory. While companies like Motorola, and Amazon have focused their efforts on the tablet market, combating the iPad, Apple has roped of this section of the market. No one dares to cross the line? that is until Samsung decided to make a device of their own.

Recently they released their own portable media player, the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. This is the first device that could potentially rival the iPod touch. So, of course I got my hands on one and for the past couple weeks, put it through its paces. Keep in mind that I am an avid iPod user but I am going to try and be as unbiased as possible.

Screen:

The first noticeable thing on either of these devices is the screen. This is one of the primary factors when picking out a phone, and it is not any different with music playing devices. The iPod touch of course sports a 3.5 inch Retina Display that just looks absolutely amazing. It is always crisp and has an incredible viewing angle?from the sides it?s near 180? and the top and bottom are about 170?. The pixels are so small that the eyes cannot distinguish one from another.

The Galaxy Player?s WVGA screen is really not as nice. Edges on text are not nearly as smooth and sharp and the viewing angle is slightly worse. However, the Samsung has much more screen real estate. In fact at 5 inches, the entire iPod touch can nearly fit on the Player?s screen alone. This makes watching YouTube more enjoyable and the web experience is closer to that of a desktop. Because of the large screen on the Galaxy Player though, things seem just a little blown out of proportion.? I think there is a reason that phones do not go this big, because 5 inches feels like a small tablet. Beyond screen size, Samsung?s device is less responsive and accurate. When typing, my fingers, although the screen is so much bigger, never seem to hit the right keys. (More on this later).

Overall I?m going to have to say that the iPod wins this round. Its retina display is brighter, sharper, and more accurate. You might be thinking that bigger is always better, but even though it only has a 3.5 inch screen, it feels more comfortable in the hand and provides for a better user experience.

iPod touch: 1/Galaxy Player: 0

External Hardware:

Hardware is the next thing I look for in a good product. The number of buttons, where they are located, and how esthetically pleasing the device is, are all key factors. To begin with, the iPod touch is has some great hardware. Apple keeps buttons to a minimum and gave it a sleek metal back. The 30pin connector and headset jack are located on the bottom while the top has the power/lock button. The volume controls are located on the side. The front of the device has only the screen, camera, and the home button. The iPod touch is definitely for those who prefer a minimalistic look.

The Galaxy Player 5.0 has quite a different build. The back is all plastic and it has two speaker grills. At the top of the device is where you will find a MicroSD card slot. On the right side, you get a power button and a volume rocker and located on the bottom there is the headset jack, microphone, and microUSB port. The front of the device has the screen, front facing camera, and 3 capacitive buttons?menu, home, and back. There is also some sort of earphone grill, but I can?t figure out what it is for, because it is not a phone? The Galaxy Player?s, face reminds me a lot of previous versions of the iPhone, as it sports a silver bevel.

I actually prefer the Player?s 3 buttons as opposed to the iPod?s one. Having a dedicated back key took a bit to get used to, but it is surprisingly convenient. I like how the buttons are not physical keys either, because it makes the front so sleek looking. The only problem is that they are only on, when the device is unlocked, so unlike the iPod touch, you can only wake the device with the power button. This isn?t a huge deal, but out of habit I try to press the home button to wake it. The microSD slot was not a bad idea either; because the Galaxy Player only has 8GB of storage, having the ability to expand to is really great. I also prefer the plastic back opposed to the iPod?s metal one. Yea it?s plastic, but the iPod?s back is a scratch magnet (and probably the worst decision Apple designers have ever made). I am able to set it down without worrying about getting about a million scratches. ?The Samsung also has two speaker grills on the back. Because the touch?s speaker is internal, it is not as loud and clear.

Due to the dedicated back button, the better speakers, and the harder-to-scratch back, the external hardware winner is, in my opinion, clearly the Samsung Galaxy Player.

iPod touch:1/Galaxy Player:1

Overall?Aesthetics:

Neither of these devices look bad. They each have something going on for them in terms of form and style. I am putting all function aside and just judging on pure looks. Shallow? Yes, but I think appearance does matter.

The iPod Touch is a thing of beauty. With its slim form factor and its sleek steel back it represents everything that is Apple. It is so pleasing to look at with its all black front and?iconic single?button. The Apple logo on the back completes the package. The iPod is one of the best looking devices on the market.

This being said, the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.o is no ugly ducking. It is not as thin as or small as the iPod, but surprisingly, there is not that big of a weight difference?81 grams. The Galaxy player does have a silver bevel around the edge, which in my opinion, it could do without. It also has the silver Samsung logo on the front which takes away from the sleek black. The back edges are rounded though, making it comfortable in the hands.

I am going to have to give this one to the iPod Touch. I just don?t think there are many devices out there that can beat an Apple device. They are so pure and simple and I could stare at it for hours.

iPod touch: 2/Galaxy Player: 1

Internal Hardware:

Everyone always says it is what?s on the inside that counts. Of course I am talking about the processor, the battery, and the other bits and pieces that go into these two devices, but the saying holds true. ?How long can I get on a single charge of the battery? How fast is the processor? Things like this are always important to me.

The iPod Touch has Apple?s 1GHz A4 processor (underclocked to 800MHz) and 256MB of RAM. While it is not the fastest processor on the market, applications load quick enough and Apple?s version of multitasking is made possible. As far as the battery goes, the iPod has a lithium-ion battery that Apple says lasts anywhere from about?7 hours (continuous video playback) to?40 hours (music playback). The Touch also has a gyroscope and accelerometer which are primarily used in gaming. Lastly, it has flash storage ranging from 8-64Gigs.

Samsung?s device has the 1GHz hummingbird processor and double the RAM at 512MB. Things load fairly quickly, but it is not a landslide over the iPod. Some applications?like Angry Birds?load faster on the iPod where others?like Facebook and Dolphin Web Browser?are quicker on the Galaxy Player. The GP has a Li-Polymer battery that Samsung claims gets 8 hours of video playback and 60 hours of music. In my personal experience, the battery lasts about as long as I do in a day. I charge it every night before I go to bed, and it lasts late into the night the next day. It also does seem to have a longer standby time than that of the iPod Touch. The Galaxy Player only has 8Gigs of internal storage, but with the SD card slot, it is expandable up to 40. Like Apple?s device, Samsung also put in an accelerometer and gyroscope; however, they also added a compass and GPS. The GPS is a really great feature for traveling. I can load the Google maps, and it will give me turn by turn directions. This is something that the iPod is lacking and definitely needs.

I think I am going to call this one a draw. The Galaxy Player has a faster processor on paper, but in my actual tests, it was not that big of a difference. And while it also has a GPS, this is not a make-or-break feature. Both batteries last as long as I need them to and although the Player?s battery lasts longer, the iPod does charge a bit faster. It can charge to 80% in about 2 hours whereas the Galaxy Player takes FOR-EV-ER.

iPod touch: 3/Player Touch :2

As you can see, these to multimedia players are fairly equal. One maybe have a better quality display, while the other may be bigger. The iPod Touch charges faster, but doesn?t last as long as the Galaxy Player. Samsung?s device has a faster processor and more RAM but Apple uses some sort of magic to make the Touch just as fast.

Final score for part one: iPod touch: 3/Galaxy Player: 2

Stay tuned for part two, where I will take a look at the cameras, media playback, and software. If there is anything specific you want me to look at, leave a comment below or send me a tweet @TiP_Bryce.

Anti-Putin protests draw tens of thousands (AP)

MOSCOW ? Tens of thousands of Russians jammed a Moscow avenue Saturday to demand free elections and an end to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's 12-year rule, in the largest show of public outrage since the protests 20 years ago that brought down the Soviet Union. Gone was the political apathy of recent years as many shouted "We are the Power!"

The demonstration, bigger and better organized than a similar one two weeks ago, and smaller rallies across the country encouraged opposition leaders hoping to sustain a protest movement ignited by a fraud-tainted parliamentary election on Dec. 4.

The enthusiasm also cheered Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader who closed down the Soviet Union on Dec. 25, 1991.

"I'm happy that I have lived to see the people waking up. This raises big hopes," the 80-year-old Gorbachev said on Ekho Moskvy radio.

He urged Putin to follow his example and give up power peacefully, saying Putin would be remembered for the positive things he did if he stepped down now. The former Soviet leader, who has grown increasingly critical of Putin, has little influence in Russia today.

But the protesters have no central leader and no candidate capable of posing a serious challenge to Putin, who intends to return to the presidency in a March vote.

Even at Saturday's rally, some of the speakers were jeered by the crowd. The various liberal, nationalist and leftist groups that took part appear united only by their desire to see "Russia without Putin," a popular chant.

Putin, who gave no public response to the protest Saturday, initially derided the demonstrators as paid agents of the West. He also said sarcastically that he thought the white ribbons they wore as an emblem were condoms. Putin has since come to take their protests more seriously, and in an effort to stem the anger he has offered a set of reforms to allow more political competition in future elections.

Kremlin-controlled television covered Saturday's rally, but gave no air time to Putin's harshest critics.

Estimates of the number of demonstrators ranged from the police figure of 30,000 to 120,000 offered by the organizers. Demonstrators packed much of a broad avenue, which has room for nearly 100,000 people, about 2.5 kilometers (some 1.5 miles) from the Kremlin, as the temperature dipped well below freezing.

A stage at the end of the avenue featured banners reading "Russia will be free" and "This election Is a farce." Heavy police cordons encircled the participants, who stood within metal barriers, and a police helicopter hovered overhead.

Alexei Navalny, a corruption-fighting lawyer and popular blogger, electrified the crowd when he took the stage. He soon had the protesters chanting "We are the power!"

Navalny spent 15 days in jail for leading a protest on Dec. 5 that unexpectedly drew more than 5,000 people and set off the chain of demonstrations.

Putin's United Russia party lost 25 percent of its seats in the election, but hung onto a majority in parliament through what independent observers said was widespread fraud. United Russia, seen as representing a corrupt bureaucracy, has become known as the party of crooks and thieves, a phrase coined by Navalny.

"We have enough people here to take the Kremlin," Navalny shouted to the crowd. "But we are peaceful people and we won't do that ? yet. But if these crooks and thieves keep cheating us, we will take what is ours."

Protest leaders expressed skepticism about Putin's promised political reforms.

"We don't trust him," opposition leader Boris Nemtsov told the rally, urging protesters to gather again after the long New Year's holidays to make sure the proposed changes are put into law.

He and other speakers called on the demonstrators to go to the polls in March to unseat Putin. "A thief must not sit in the Kremlin," Nemtsov said.

The protest leaders said they would keep up their push for a rerun of the parliamentary vote and punishment for election officials accused of fraud, while stressing the need to prevent fraud in the March presidential election.

Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov was among those who sought to give the protesters a sense of empowerment.

"There are so many of us here, and they (the government) are few," Kasparov said from the stage. "They are huddled up in fear behind police cordons."

The crowd was largely young, but included a sizable number of middle-aged and elderly people, some of whom limped slowly to the site on walkers and canes.

"We want to back those who are fighting for our rights," said 16-year-old Darya Andryukhina, who said she had also attended the previous rally.

"People have come here because they want respect," said Tamara Voronina, 54, who said she was proud that her three sons also had joined the protest.

Putin's comment about protesters wearing condoms only further infuriated them and inspired some creative responses. One protester Saturday held a picture montage of Putin with his head wrapped in a condom like a grandmother's headscarf. Many inflated condoms along with balloons.

The protests reflect a growing weariness with Putin, who was first elected president in 2000 and remained in charge after moving into the prime minister's seat in 2008. Brazen fraud in the parliamentary vote unexpectedly energized the middle class, which for years had been politically apathetic.

"No one has done more to bring so many people here than Putin, who managed to insult the whole country," said Viktor Shenderovich, a columnist and satirical writer.

Two rallies in St. Petersburg on Saturday drew a total of 4,000 people.

"I'm here because I'm tired of the government's lies," said Dmitry Dervenev, 47, a designer. "The prime minister insulted me personally when he said that people came to the rallies because they were paid by the U.S. State Department. I'm here because I'm a citizen of my country."

Putin accused the United States of encouraging and funding the protests to weaken Russia.

Putin's former finance minister surprised the protesters by saying the current parliament should approve the proposed electoral changes and then step down to allow new parliamentary elections to be held. Alexei Kudrin, who remains close to Putin, warned that the wave of protests could lead to violence and called for establishing a dialogue between the opposition and the government.

"Otherwise we will lose the chance for peaceful transformation," Kudrin said.

Kudrin also joined calls for the ouster of Central Election Commission chief Vladimir Churov.

Putin has promised to liberalize registration rules for opposition parties and restore the direct election of governors he abolished in 2004. Putin's stand-in as president, Dmitry Medvedev, spelled out those and other proposed changes in Thursday's state-of-the nation address.

Gorbachev, however, said the government appears confused.

"They don't know what to do," he said. "They are making attempts to get out of the trap they drove themselves into."

Yemen leader urges truce after troops kill protesters (Reuters)

SANAA (Reuters) ? Yemen's acting leader on Sunday urged foes and loyalists of President Ali Abdullah to call a truce, after Saleh's forces killed nine people demanding he be tried for the deaths of demonstrators over nearly a year of protests against him.

Troops from what witnesses identified as loyalist units opened fire on tens of thousands of protesters approaching Saleh's compound in the capital on Saturday after a days-long march from the city of Taiz by protesters chanting "No to immunity!."

They referred to a pledge to spare Saleh prosecution in exchange for giving his powers to his deputy, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, and letting a government including opposition parties lead Yemen to a February election to replace Saleh after 33 years.

That government is to separate Saleh's forces from rebel army units and tribal militias they have fought in Sanaa, a key to a power transfer deal brokered by neighboring Gulf states to avert a civil war they fear will affect them.

The state news agency on Sunday quoted Hadi as saying during a meeting with U.S. ambassador Gerald Feierstein that all sides "must commit ... to a truce and respect its rules forbidding escalation" that would threaten the transition deal.

Washington long backed Saleh as a cornerstone of its "counter-terrorism" policy in Yemen, which includes the use of drones to kill alleged al Qaeda members. A CIA drone strike killed Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen linked to Al Qaeda's regional wing, earlier this year.

MILITARY DENIES IT KILLED PROTESTERS

Hours after the killings, Saleh said he would leave for the United States and give way to the new government and the vote to pick his successor. But he gave no timetable for leaving and vowed to return in opposition to the government.

"An unstable Yemen means an unstable region. So, protect the security, unity and stability of Yemen, neighbor states," he told reporters. "Its security is yours."

A defense ministry website, September 26, on Sunday cited an unidentified official as denying the military - key units of which are led by Saleh's son and nephew - played any role in the killing of the protesters in Sanaa.

It pinned the blame on the interior ministry - now led by an opposition figure - calling witness and news accounts of pro-Saleh troops shooting protesters "baseless, mendacious claims that are part of a vicious media campaign ... against the defense establishment."

The interim government, led by a former foreign minister who joined the opposition against Saleh, late on Saturday called for an investigation of the killings.

The youth-led protesters who have taken to the streets against Saleh have condemned the opposition parties - some of which once took part in Saleh's governments - for agreeing to grant him immunity. They demand that he and his inner circle be tried and banned from power.

Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director of Human Rights Watch, called on governments to ignore the immunity pledge and freeze Saleh's assets abroad, saying: "Promises of immunity encourage rather than deter illegal attacks."

Any post-Saleh government would face overlapping regional conflicts that have displaced nearly half a million people. Attacks on infrastructure hamper the modest oil exports that fund imports of staple foods.

Fighting with Islamists who have seized chunks of territory in a southern province, Abyan, has sent tens of thousands of its residents to flight, compounding Yemen's humanitarian crisis.

Militants killed a security officer on Sunday night as he got out of his car in the southern port city of Aden, a security source said. The source could not verify the identities of the militants.

Separatist sentiment is also surging in the south.

Washington steps up in Britt's absence for Titans

Associated Press

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 7:01 PM

Updated today at 7:01 PM

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Tennessee receiver Nate Washington is proof of how much a little confidence boost can mean to an NFL player.

Even with Kenny Britt out since September, the seventh-year veteran is having his best season yet in the NFL and is just four catches shy of having the most catches by a receiver on this team since 2004. Washington also has stepped up as a much-needed leader for the Titans in Mike Munchak's first season as head coach.

Washington credits former quarterback turned receivers coach Dave Ragone with boosting his confidence as a receiver by telling him early and often since the lockout how great he could be, making him work harder to step up his game.

The Titans (7-7) host Jacksonville (4-10) on Saturday.

Google Decides To Keep Firefox In Business: Signs A Three Year ...

Image: AP

"Don't be evil."

?

Google just cut a deal to be the default search engine in Mozilla's Firefox web browser for the next three years.

The deal is a life-saver for Mozilla?84% of the company's revenue has come directly from a previous deal with Google that did the same thing.

Had Google decided not to renew its search engine deal with Mozilla, it could've effectively killed the company.

After all, Google's Chrome browser is now neck and neck with Firefox, each browser maintaining about a 25% chunk of the web browser market.

In this case, it seems that "don't be evil" still matters.

WikiLeaks founder granted extradition appeal in UK

FILE - This is a Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 file photo of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as he talks during a news conference in central London. (AP) ? Britain's Supreme Court said Friday it had agreed to hear WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's appeal against extradition to Sweden over sex crimes allegations.

The court said a panel of three judges had considered a written submission and granted a two-day appeal beginning on Feb. 1, meaning there is no prospect of Assange being sent to Stockholm until at least next year.

In a statement, the court said it had "decided that seven justices will hear the appeal given the great public importance of the issue raised, which is whether a prosecutor is a judicial authority."

Assange's legal team argue that police and prosecutors ? like the Swedish prosecutor seeking to bring Assange back to the country for questioning ? are not a proper judicial authority, and shouldn't have the right to order extraditions.

Earlier this month, High Court judges John Thomas and Duncan Ouseley said Assange could apply to the Supreme Court to argue that point and seek to prove that Europe's process of carrying out extradition was flawed.

However, Thomas warned Assange that his chance of success "may be extraordinarily slim."

Assange ? who leads the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website ? was accused of rape, coercion and molestation following encounters with two Swedish women in August 2010. Swedish authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant on rape and molestation accusations, and Assange was arrested in London in December 2010.

The 40-year-old denies wrongdoing and is currently on bail on the condition that he lives under curfew at a supporter's country estate in eastern England and wears an electronic tag.

Claes Borgstrom, the lawyer in Sweden representing the two women, said the decision would cause more strain for his clients ? and predicted Assange would eventually face extradition.

"It is stressful for my clients that there is yet another extension," Borgstrom told AP by telephone.

"I assume that the Supreme Court will rule that Assange should be extradited according to the European Arrest warrant. If not, you can scrap it," he said.

In a hearing in London in February, Judge Howard Riddle had ruled that Assange can be extradited to Sweden to face questions about the allegations, rejecting his claims that he would not receive a fair trial there.

Assange appealed to the High Court, and will now take his legal battle to the country's highest legal authority, the Supreme Court. The hearing will be his last avenue in Britain to avoid extradition, though lawyers have said they could consider a further appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
