Visiting Rajasthan, India.: 15 Day Trip Through ... - Wandering Trader

Visiting Rajasthan happens to be one of the top 5 most visited tourist routes in all of India?according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. Many travelers don?t realize how large India is and how its considered not just a country, but a subcontinent.

When I recently visited the World Travel Market in London every section was organized by continent with India having an entire section to themselves.

There are a massive number of cultures and people from very different walks of life that were united in what we now know as India under British rule.

India is commonly described as a land of contrasts for that very reason.

The original reason I came to India was to see if I could open a day trading center in the country as part as my ongoing effort to teach people financial and location?independence?with my Congressive day trading strategy?at The Day Trading Academy. ?So many people have been doing so well that I have been overwhelmed with training and had an original vision to train people in India.

This would allow people in India the opportunity to make more money in a day than most people make in an entire month, especially in India.

Rajasthan India, Rajasthan

Rajasthan on a map of India

So far there have been positives and negatives while exploring the viability of a trading center in Mumbai, Goa, and at last, New Delhi. ?Being that I always take the end of the year off since the stock market typically has very low volume I decided to look into the possibility of visiting Rajasthan, the land of the kings.

What I decided on was a customized 15/16 day trip through the region with a personal driver. ?I would be visited the following cities below:

  • Mandawa
  • Bikaner
  • Jaisalmer
  • Jodhpur
  • Udaipur
  • Pushkar
  • Jaipur
  • Back To New Delhi

Half of my Rajasthan trip is actually almost over and I have seen some incredible things so far, everything from a Rajasthani Romeo to 4 men getting cozy on a motorcycle.

Many people are now asking me how much time they should spend in India and if you don?t have at least three weeks to explore part of the country I would recommend not even coming at all.

When visiting Rajasthan & the rest of India I realized that many people don?t realize how rough traveling to India actually is. ?Most of my life I have been living overseas?in what most people would consider ?third world countries?. ?India is in a whole different league. ?Between deficiencies in infrastructure and the?bureaucracy things take forever to get done in India.

Visiting Rajasthan

Visiting Rajasthan Itinerary courtesy of google maps

I can now attest to the fact that you haven?t traveled to a third world country until you come to India.

The way business is done and the mentality of the people here really has shed a bright light on the prospects of not only opening a day trading center here, but also my prospects for investing overseas in India.

I suspect that visiting Rajasthan won?t be my last trip here in India either. ?The sheer scale of the country and the things to see are mind boggling, it would take a minimum of 6 months just to see the highlights in the entire country.

Once I complete this current trip I will return to New Delhi to complete some much needed work & then embark on the next adventure, Agra & the Taj Mahal, Varanasi which is the?spiritual?home of India, and a few cities in between.

I think many people often neglect the things to do in New Delhi and tourists don?t realize the history that is found in the old capital of the?Mughal Empire (New Delhi). ?The Mughals were the controlling force on the subcontinent of India & Pakistan for much of the 16th & 17th centuries (through early 18th century).

Shah Jahan, the man that commissioned the building of the Taj Mahal, reigned during this time.

There are a few things that I have learned about visiting India?for the first time that you should know if you haven?t been. Firstly, you are either going to travel first class or cheap backpacker style, there is no in-between. ?Secondly, it pays to plan your trip well in advance or book everything through a travel agent if you want things to go (more) smoothly.

India is one of the largest?bureaucracies?in the world so it takes 10 times longer to get things done and if you think there is a way to travel that isn?t first class or cheap backpacker style you are highly mistaken. I have tried it several times to no availability and have had to choose the one that is more comfortable.

Another new wave of Nexus 4s shipping

Nexus 4

Nary a moment too soon, word in our Nexus 4 forums is that another batch of the hard-to-buy (and harder-to-ship, apparently) smartphone is on its way to the good boys and girls. The phone's still sold out on Google Play, both in the 8- and 16-gigabyte versions, as are the rubber bumpers. (Interesting, though, is that it's saying we've reached our limit for bumper purchases, not that they're sold out. Apparently we're consider bumper horders or something.)

Anyhoo. Be on the lookout for a shipping e-mail if you haven't gotten on already.

HBT: Lions' Hanson undecided about return or retirement

Lomas Brown LionsGetty Images

A funny thing happened in the course of Lomas Brown trying to walk back his claim last week that he once intentionally missed a block in order to get his teammate Scott Mitchell injured: Brown says he has discovered that his memory is wrong, and the play on which he purposely missed a block is different than the play on which Mitchell suffered a season-ending injury.

That?s what Brown told Gregg Doyel of CBS: According to Brown, the former Lions left tackle who is now an ESPN commentator, ESPN went through its archives and found the play that ended Mitchell?s season, and it wasn?t the same play that Brown remembered.

After Brown?s boast about purposely getting Mitchell hurt became a hot topic in the NFL this week, someone posted a video on YouTube that appears to show the play that got Mitchell hurt in a loss to the Packers. That play does show Brown lining up at left tackle and turning to the inside, leaving Packers right defensive end Sean Jones alone to rush to the outside and get a free shot at Mitchell. But as the New York Times noted, there?s really no way to know whether Brown was supposed to block Jones on that play and intentionally let him go, or whether the Lions? pass protection on that play called for Brown to block to the inside.

Brown?s memory of the 1994 game is faulty. He described the Lions as being down 24-3 at the time he missed his block, but the score of that game was never 24-3. Based on the YouTube video, it appears that the score was actually 10-0 when Mitchell was hurt. And Brown?s description of the play suggests that he initially engaged Jones but then let him go, while the video shows Brown turning inside at the snap and never going near Jones.

In any event, whether Mitchell?s injury actually happened on a play on which Brown intentionally missed a block isn?t particularly important. Either (1) Brown tried to injure a teammate and succeeded, or (2) Brown tried to injure a teammate and failed but happened to get his wish because the teammate got injured on another play in the same game. Brown initially claimed option 1 but now claims option 2. Neither of those options reflects well on Brown.

The third option is that Brown fabricated a story about intentionally injuring a teammate because he thought that would be a swell way to get attention. That sounds ridiculous, but considering that Brown makes his living by appearing on ESPN First Take, a show that encourages its panelists to seek attention by making outrageous statements, it?s plausible.

If that?s what happened, and Brown has now discovered that the attention he generated is unwanted, claiming that he wasn?t actually responsible for Mitchell?s injury might be Brown?s way of attempting to minimize the damage to his reputation. But whatever Brown may say now, his reputation has been permanently tarnished.

Bluestacks for Mac now in beta

Bluestacks for Mac

Here's a quick heads up for those of you who just have to run the occasional Android application siloed on your computer -- Bluestacks is now in beta for Macs. If you're new to Bluestacks, the idea is that it works as a sort of an emulator for Android apps -- some 750,000 of them, actually -- giving you full control with a keyboard and mouse. And while your experience may vary a little bit depending on hardware, it's actually a really good implementation, though it's not necessarily the quickest to load.

There's also the argument that it's a little silly to use apps like Facebook and Instagram as an Android app on a desktop, but whatever. It's still pretty damn cool, especially for games.

So, go get the Mac beta if you want to give it a go, and remember that there's a Windows version available, too.

What are 3 hardware trends for 2013?

It?s the end of the year and the Mayan apocalypse didn?t happen, and most of us have had a stressful but memorable Christmas. Now it?s time to wind 2012 down and gear up for 2013. One way managers get ready for the year ahead is by looking at what?s out there and popular. As the demand and use of technology grows many businesses are looking into tech related trends.

Here?s our prediction of the top three hardware trends small to medium businesses can expect in the coming year.

Phones and tablets that fly
The processing power and capabilities of both smartphones and tablets are advancing at a rapid pace. From the looks of it there should be an octo-core mobile processor (8 cores) introduced along with increasingly powerful quad-core processors. If an 8 core phone surfaces in 2013 it will give many modern computers a run for their money.

Four-core processors will also increase in power. For example: Samsung is rumored to be working with a new processor that could very well see speeds of up to 2Ghz (on par with entry to mid level computers). Sound like overkill for a phone? Perhaps, but put that processor in a tablet and you could see a mobile device that can handle almost anything.

Regardless of if these rumored processors make it into devices or not, small business owners should expect to see a wealth of phones and tablets that are not only affordable, but are powerful enough to either implement as an extension of the modern desktop, or even replace it.

Increasing demands for BYOD
People have gone gadget happy. Take a look around the office. How many employees have a smartphone or tablet? Chances are high it?s nearly 100%. With the sheer number of devices available at affordable rates you can bet that tech gadgets were a top gift unwrapped on Christmas morning. Come New Year, employees will be itching to bring their brand new devices into the office.

BYOD ? Bring Your Own Device ? is a growing demand and trend of employees. Who doesn?t want to work on the system they are comfortable with? You can expect an increase in the number of requests for employees to bring in their own device. We?re not here to discuss the pros and cons, but it may be time to look into developing a BYOD policy and ensuring your systems are secure enough to support this.

NFC
NFC ? Near Field Communication ? isn?t a new idea, but it is just now starting to make its way onto phones. Google and Android device manufacturers are leading the way on the mobile front and companies like Square are pushing the mobile wallet.

The goal of NFC technology is to allow your phone to be a wallet, and handle transactions wirelessly without the need for credit/debit cards or cash. Google is pushing NFC, and it?s rumored that Apple will integrate it into new versions of their iPhone. If they do this you can bet that there will be a legion of smartphone users suddenly demanding to pay for things on their phone. This could become a major trend of 2013 that all small to medium businesses could capitalize off of.

These are just three trends that we could well see in 2013. Time will tell how these three ideas pan out. What do you think will be the the top tech trends for 2013? Let us know.

Finless Porpoises in Peril

A survey has found that fishing, pollution and other human activities along the Yangtze River in China are driving a freshwater mammal, the Yangtze finless Porpoise, to the brink of extinction

dolphin photo The Yangtze finless porpoise is in decline in the wild, with the latest estimate suggesting it might be critically endangered. Image: http://www.nature.com/polopoly_fs/7.8165.1356108785!/image/web-72578595.jpg

Fishing, pollution and other human activities along the Yangtze River in China are driving yet another species of freshwater cetacean to the brink of extinction. That is the conclusion of a six-week survey of the river?s middle and lower stretches by the Chinese Academy of Sciences? Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) in Wuhan and the conservation group WWF in China.

The final results of the survey will be announced in March. But the preliminary findings are worrying: the survey team spotted fewer than half of the Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis) that were seen during a similar expedition in 2006, which found 1,225 living in the river.

?This is really bad news,? says Wang Ding, an ecologist at the IHB who is the survey's chief scientist. ?The finless porpoises are doing much worse than previously thought along the Yangtze mainstream.?

The Yangtze finless porpoise is one of the world?s few remaining freshwater cetaceans. It is found only in the Yangtze, as well as in two adjoining lakes, called Poyang and Dongting. Scientists hope that the porpoises can avoid the same fate as the Yangtze river dolphin, or baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), which was declared effectively extinct after the 2006 survey.

Endangered ecosystem
The latest survey also found that a population of about 450 porpoises in Poyang Lake has been stable for the past six years. But only 90 of the animals remained in Dongting Lake, a decline of 40% since 2006. This means that there is a total of only around 1,000 finless porpoises in the Yangtze River basin ? making them even rarer than giant pandas in the wild.?

?Losing these big, top carnivores in the Yangtze is a pretty good indication of the terrible state of the river ecosystem,? says David Dudgeon, an ecologist at the University of Hong Kong in China, who was not involved in the survey.

"Intense human impact is to blame," says Lei Gang, director of WWF China's freshwater program. "The conflict between conservation and economic development along the Yangtze is overwhelming."

Overfishing has caused a big decline in the porpoises? food sources, says Wang, and the animals are vulnerable to unregulated fishing methods such as electro-fishing, which involves sending electrical currents into the water to stun fish before they are caught.

Pollution problem
Pollution is another major, long-term threat, says Dudgeon. The Yangtze, regarded by Chinese people as their ?mother river?, supports 40% of the country?s human population, and its riverbanks are lined with large cities, factories and power plants. According to Dudgeon, about 20 billion tons of waste are discharged into the Yangtze every year. ?This doesn?t even include diffuse pollution from agriculture or pollution caused by ships,? he says.

Like other cetacean species, the Yangtze finless porpoise uses sonar for navigation, ranging and foraging. But the high density of shipping along the Yangtze creates high levels of acoustic pollution, which interferes with the animals? sonar. ?This affects their feeding and many are also wounded or die because of ship strikes,? says Lei.

Other human activities such as dam building, land reclamation and sand dredging have contributed to large-scale habitat loss and degradation in the Yangtze River basin in recent decades, says Lei.

The Yangtze finless porpoise is currently listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. ?The new estimate may qualify them as critically endangered,? says Wang. ?If the situation does not improve significantly, they may follow the fate of baiji in 15 years.?

Future of state estate taxes hangs on U.S. "fiscal cliff"

(Reuters) - Falling off the "fiscal cliff" is a bad thing, right?

Not necessarily for some state governments that could begin collecting more in estate taxes on wealth left to heirs if the United States goes over the "cliff," allowing sharp tax increases and federal spending cuts to take effect in January.

In an example of federal and state tax law interaction that gets little notice on Capitol Hill, 30 states next year could collect $3 billion more in estate taxes if Congress and President Barack Obama do not act soon, estimated the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank.

The reason? The federal estate tax would return with a vengeance and so would a federal credit system that shares a portion of it with the 30 states. They had been getting their cut of this tax revenue stream until the early 2000s. That was when the credit system for payment of state estate tax went away due to tax cuts enacted under former President George W. Bush.

With the return of the credit system next year as part of the "cliff," states such as Florida, Colorado and Texas - which have not collected estate tax since 2004 - could resume doing so. California Governor Jerry Brown has already begun to add the anticipated estate tax revenue into his plans, including $45 million of it in his 2012-2013 revised budget.

Brown may or may not be jumping the gun.

CLOUDY CLIFF AHEAD

The outlook on the "fiscal cliff" coming up at year-end is uncertain. Democratic President Barack Obama has said he hopes for a last-minute deal to avert it. That would need to get done soon, with Congress just now coming back from its holiday break.

Chances of an agreement became more remote last week after Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives fumbled their own legislative attempt to prevent the fiscal jolt that economists say could trigger a recession.

House Speaker John Boehner abruptly adjourned the chamber for the holidays after failing to gather the votes from within his own party to pass legislation he and other Republicans had drafted, after walking out of negotiations with Obama.

Weeks of inconclusive political drama over the "cliff" have focused largely on individual income tax rates and spending on federal programs such Medicare and Social Security, but many tax issues are also involved, including the estate tax.

At the moment, under laws signed a decade ago by Bush, the estate tax is applied to inherited assets at a rate of 35 percent after a $5 million exemption. That means a deceased person can pass on an inheritance of up to $5 million before any tax applies. Inherited wealth passed to a spouse or a federally recognized charity is generally not taxed.

Obama wants to raise the rate to 45 percent after a $3.5 million exemption. Republicans have called for complete repeal of the estate tax, which they call the "death tax," though Boehner earlier this month called for freezing the estate tax at its present level. It was difficult to determine what the Republicans want after last week's events in the House.

STATES STAND TO GAIN

If Congress and Obama do not act by December 31, numerous Bush-era tax laws will expire, including the one on estate taxes. That would mean the estate tax rate will shoot up next year to the pre-Bush levels of 55 percent after a $1 million exemption.

It would also mean that for the first time in years, a portion of that estate tax would go to the states, through the return of the credit system.

Under that old law, estates paying the tax could get a credit against their federal tax bill for state estate tax payments of up to 16 percent of the estate's value.

If the fiscal cliff were allowed to take hold unaltered by Washington, 30 states would again automatically begin getting their share of federal estate taxes. The state laws are generally written so the state estate tax amounts are calculated under a formula based on the amount of the federal credit.

This would help states that have struggled with lower tax revenues since the 2007-2009 financial crisis and resulting recession, according to research by the Pew Center on the States, though painful federal spending cut backs would also hurt the states.
