First snapshot of organisms eating each other: Feast clue to smell of ancient Earth

Apr. 29, 2013 ? Tiny 1,900 million-year-old fossils from rocks around Lake Superior, Canada, give the first ever snapshot of organisms eating each other and suggest what the ancient Earth would have smelled like.

The fossils, preserved in Gunflint chert, capture ancient microbes in the act of feasting on a cyanobacterium-like fossil called Gunflintia -- with the perforated sheaths of Gunflintia being the discarded leftovers of this early meal.

A team, led by Dr David Wacey of the University of Western Australia and Bergen University, Norway, and Professor Martin Brasier of Oxford University, reports in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the fossil evidence for how this type of feeding on organic matter -- called 'heterotrophy' -- was taking place. They also show that the ancient microbes appeared to prefer to snack on Gunflintia as a 'tasty morsel' in preference to another bacterium (Huroniospora).

'What we call 'heterotrophy' is the same thing we do after dinner as the bacteria in our gut break down organic matter,' said Professor Martin Brasier of Oxford University's Department of Earth Sciences, an author of the paper. 'Whilst there is chemical evidence suggesting that this mode of feeding dates back 3,500 million years, in this study for the first time we identify how it was happening and 'who was eating who'. In fact we've all experienced modern bacteria feeding in this way as that's where that 'rotten egg' whiff of hydrogen sulfide comes from in a blocked drain. So, rather surprisingly, we can say that life on earth 1,900 million years ago would have smelled a lot like rotten eggs.'

The team analysed the microscopic fossils, ranging from about 3-15 microns in diameter, using a battery of new techniques and found that one species -- a tubular form thought to be the outer sheath of Gunflintia -- was more perforated after death than other kinds, consistent with them having been eaten by bacteria.

In some places many of the tiny fossils had been partially or entirely replaced with iron sulfide ('fool's gold') a waste product of heterotrophic sulfate-reducing bacteria that is also a highly visible marker. The team also found that these Gunflintia fossils carried clusters of even smaller (c.1 micron) spherical and rod-shaped bacteria that were seemingly in the process of consuming their hosts.

Dr Wacey said that: 'recent geochemical analyses have shown that the sulfur-based activities of bacteria can likely be traced back to 3,500 million years or so -- a finding reported by our group in Nature Geoscience in 2011. Whilst the Gunflint fossils are only about half as old, they confirm that such bacteria were indeed flourishing by 1,900 million years ago. And that they were also highly particular about what they chose to eat.'

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3: Oh, Another One?

Just in case you thought Samsung didn't offer enough variety in its tablet range, its gone ahead and launched yet another. This 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 is brand new and, um, like virtually every other Samsung tablet that's gone before it.

The third iteration of Samsung's first tablet attempt, this little seven-incher packs a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB or 16GB of storage, 3-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front facer, and Android 4.1. A fairly bland spec list to accompany what is quite a bland product.

The Wi-Fi version of the Tab 3 will roll out across the world in May, with a 3G model following in June. There's currently no word on pricing, but it will probably be comparable to the existing Tab 2. Not that you'd notice the difference. [Samsung via Engadget]

Newcastle recording studios: Factors to consider when looking for a ...

Finding a sound recording and mixing facility out of many Newcastle recording studios is a challenging job as you have to consider many factors. The first factor is the quality of service provided. It should be a professionally managed facility and above all it should be able to provide you the atmosphere and support you need for your project.

Determining your needs is the first step towards locating the right facility. You should know what you need for your project. Whether you are making a short ad film or a large music album, you should be able to complete it in time and in a hassle free manner. The facility that you are using for recording sound beats for your project should understand you needs. Also it should be ready to customize its services to suit to your needs.

Today there is hardly any business that doesn't need music for promotion and branding. Ad films, websites and promos come with background music that holds the attention of the viewer. Demand for music beats is increasing at a fast pace and this demand has attracted many entrepreneurs to set voice recording and mixing facilities. Some facilities are opened in homes, while others are opened in marketplaces.

A home based facility running from a basement or garage could provide affordable services but it is doubtful that such a studio could provide quality services. For quality, you need professional environment. Music is produced with instruments but for recording, you need suitable space, where no sound beat is lost. You would find many studios that have latest music instruments but they are unable to provide right atmosphere.

Search Newcastle recording studios to find leading facilities in this city but to locate a perfect facility, you have to carefully evaluate the services of each facility. If price is a concern then you should shed all your worries as you could negotiate the best price with a leading studio. First find reliable Newcastle recording studios and then filter your search to locate the facilities that have worked with your competitors.

Music has become a subject of law. Most of the Newcastle recording studios are aware about the involvement of law in music industry but it would be better if you could inquire how the studio handles the music rights. An ideal studio owner would never hesitate in disclosing his way of working to his clients. Also the facility owner could happily provide you the client testimonials.

Supreme Court case shows venture capitalists viewed differently ...

The Supreme Court of Canada?s dismissal today of the leave application?in Garage Technology Ventures Canada v. L?ger reaffirms the message that directors and officers of venture capital companies cannot be expected to behave as they would in more mature and financially stable companies.

The case arose when the founder of a debt-laden company secured financing from a venture capital fund whose representatives also acted as directors of the company. When the company closed after only a few months of operations, the founder sought an oppression remedy, arguing, among other things, that the investors should have put up more money.

But the Quebec Court of Appeal ruled that the obligations of directors and officers of start-ups had to be analyzed in the context of venture capital investments. Venture capitalists could not be judged in the same light as traditional financial institutions which are accustomed to committing to longer term investments. In this case, the speculative nature of the investment had to be taken into account in determining the reasonableness of the directors? actions.

?According to the [Quebec Court of Appeal], to conclude otherwise would amount to imposing disproportionate obligations on the shoulders of directors and officers of start-up companies, and would run against the principles of equity that must govern oppression remedies under the CBCA, by creating a new injustice,? write Sylvain Lussier and Elizabeth Meloche, the team from Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt who represented the successful venture capitalists throughout. Lussier and Meloche have more online.

Dutch cyberattack suspect arrested in Spain

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? A Dutch citizen has been arrested in Spain in connection with what experts described as the biggest cyberattack in the history of the Internet, one launched against an anti-spam watchdog group last month, prosecutors announced Friday.

The Netherlands National Prosecution Office said a 35-year-old suspect it identified only by his initials, S.K., was arrested Thursday at his home in Barcelona. Authorities also seized computers and mobile phones. Dutch prosecutors do not release full names of suspects, in line with privacy laws.

According to a prosecution statement, the man is suspected of "unprecedentedly serious attacks on the non-profit organization Spamhaus." He was held on a European arrest warrant and is expected to be extradited to the Netherlands to face justice.

The so-called denial-of-service attack on Spamhaus fired a torrent of data at the organization's servers and was blamed for other disruptions online. Dutch banks and an electronic payment service also have been hit by similar attacks in recent weeks, but prosecutors say they do not believe they are linked to the Spamhaus incident

Spamhaus, a site responsible for keeping ads for counterfeit Viagra and bogus weight-loss pills out of the world's inboxes, said it apparently was targeted by groups angry at being blacklisted by the Swiss-British group.

Prosecutors said the cyberattack also hit "partners" of Spamhaus in the United States, the Netherlands and Britain.

At the time, Vincent Hanna, a researcher with Spamhaus, called it a "small miracle" the organization had remained online during the cyber onslaught.

Denial-of-service attacks overwhelm a server with traffic ? like hundreds of letters being jammed through a mail slot at the same time. Security experts measure those attacks in bits of data per second. Recent cyberattacks ? such as the ones that caused persistent outages at U.S. banking sites late last year ? have tended to peak at 100 billion bits per second.

But the assault on Spamhaus shattered the charts, clocking in at 300 billion bits per second, according to San Francisco-based CloudFlare Inc., which Spamhaus enlisted to help it weather the attack.

Charge disclosed in Cuban spying against US

(AP) ? An alleged accomplice in a major spy case involving Cuba helped recruit a friend and colleague to spy for the Cuban Intelligence Service against the U.S., the Justice Department said Thursday.

Marta Rita Velazquez, once a legal officer at the State Department's Agency for International Development, is accused of conspiracy to commit espionage by helping Ana Belen Montes get a job at the Defense Intelligence Agency, where Montes engaged in espionage. Montes is serving a 25-year prison sentence.

The charge connects Velazquez to a highly damaging spy case. During the 16 years Montes was a U.S. intelligence analyst for the DIA, she revealed the identities of four undercover agents to Cuban officials.

Velazquez has remained outside the United States since 2002. She lives in Sweden and the U.S. is unable to gain her return, prompting the government to finally unseal a 9-year-old indictment against her.

The extradition treaty between the United States and Sweden does not allow extradition for political offenses, a category that includes espionage.

There was no answer after midnight at a telephone number listed on the Internet for a Marta Rita Velazquez in Stockholm.

In June 2002, Velazquez resigned from USAID following news reports that Montes had pleaded guilty to espionage and was cooperating with the government.

Velazquez graduated from Princeton University in 1979, obtained a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington in 1984.

Velazquez was a student together with Montes at the Johns Hopkins facility, located in Washington, in the early 1980s.

The indictment alleges that starting in 1983, Velazquez conspired to transmit to the Cuban government information relating to the U.S. national defense. In December 1984, Velazquez introduced Montes in New York City to a Cuban intelligence officer and in 1985 Velazquez accompanied Montes on a clandestine trip to Cuba for Montes to receive spy craft training from the Cuban intelligence service, the indictment adds.

At the present time, your online business needs a strong focus on Website marketing. Promoting yourself and your website online is vital to the success of your business. If you're not engaged in Online marketing already, now's the time to begin. Before you get started, make sure you check out these marketing tips to help you promote your web business.

Give something away to those visiting your website. One of the most popular giveaways used by online businesses is an interesting and relevant article. For example, if you are a general contractor, you might have a good article of home repair tips for your customers to download. This tells customers that you care about what is important to them.

Use persuasive words in your emails to customers, encouraging them to take a specific action. Actions you want customers to take can range from purchasing a product, visiting a page on your site or subscribing to your ezine. Since you can track these actions, you will be able to see how effective your marketing efforts are.

There is no exact formula to internet marking, rather it is half art and half science. You must research the online advertising methods that are effective within your industry and learn about newly designed techniques. This can sometimes be challenging.

Whatever claims you make in your website advertizing about top blogging sites, make sure you can back it up with facts. If people believe you are trying to sell them something, they are likely to be distrustful. Credibility is key; augment your sales pitch with support like references, customer testimonials and fact-based evidence. Unless you can substantiate your claims, you run the risk of appearing dishonest or lazy in the eyes of your prospective customers.

To advertise your product, you should create a sort of FAQ. For each issue or question, write a helpful answer, and be sure to mention your products as a solution. Write your questions with this in mind, giving yourself the subtle opportunity to promote your wares.

Affiliate marketing takes a lot of work and research. Choose a trusted mentor that you admire online. Many veteran internet marketers give out free advice, and some mentor newbies for a fee. Once you have chosen a technique you want to try, stick with it until it proves profitable or shows that you need to move on to a new technique. You may have a slow start, but in the end, it will be well worth the effort.

Customers should be able to provide a rating for products in your listing. Additionally, at your discretion, you can allow them to write a review of a product they have purchased. Not only can these reviews help you improve your products, but they allow potential customers to feel more confident in their purchasing decision.

Always avoid spam. Web crawlers, which quickly post hundreds or thousands of comments in a short amount of time, rarely produce the desired effect for your business. Instead, the lack of personalization when advertising could turn your customers off and cause them to become less interested.

Make sure the design of your website on blogging for dummies, makes your links highly visible. This will give the people interested in you, more ease when looking through your website. All of your information will not be hidden away in obscure links that no one can seem to find.

Always try to keep your content fresh and current on your website. If your site only contains dated information, potential customers may think the website is old or your company is closed. A website that is user-friendly and up-to-date is inviting for readers.

Tailor versions of your website to different audiences worldwide. Translate the content into multiple languages so that people all over the world can read your site. This is a potent approach to increase global sales. Customers who can read your website in their own language are more likely to make a purchase from the site.

Ask major companies to add your link to their site, this will make you more credible. Visitors will see these familiar and trusted names on your site and have a tendency toward association, giving you the benefit of the doubt as well as a favorable customer image. In the future, their larger customer base will think of you when they think of them.

Design your banners to be subtle and not annoying to visitors to your website. Do not let them know that it is really a link. Many people do not click banners, but they will not hesitate to click a link that will lead them to more info.

When marketing your business online, it's important that you make your customers feel as if they're in control. This might require you to set up your content in such a way that the customer actually dictates the flow. This is important today in a marketing world full of spam and unwanted opinions. Always have a link people can click on if they wish to discontinue emails from you.

Create a 500 error page that is user-friendly. This happens when your code does not work properly. A boring page that gives this message may annoy your potential customer. You can inform your customers that you know about the problem and are working on resolving it in by better methods than resorting to the generic error page.

Change around the links you use in your emails. Emails that are always the same are the ones that are most often ignored. Customers don't like seeing the same thing repeatedly, and it's important to offer variation to keep them engaged.

Most of the tactics you'll learn about are very easy to implement. You just need to make sure you implement them correctly. There are several approaches for this. So much information is at your disposal to begin to reap the rewards. By following these tips, you are well on your way to becoming a successful internet marketer.

Rhode Island set to become 10th state to allow gay marriage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Rhode Island senators put their state on the path Wednesday to becoming the 10th state to allow same-sex couples to marry, passing legislation by a comfortable 26-12 margin after nearly two decades of attempts to legalize gay marriage.

The bill passed the House in January and now returns there for a largely procedural vote, likely next week, before going to Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who supports the legislation.

Hundreds of gay marriage supporters erupted into cheers and applause ? and many cried ? outside the Senate chamber following the vote.

"I think it's actually going to happen," said Michael Sherman, 45, a gay man from Providence who came to the Statehouse for the historic vote. "When you tell someone they can't do something because they're different from you, people see that as just wrong. It shouldn't have taken this long."

While the other five New England states already allow gay marriage, heavily Catholic Rhode Island has been a hold-out. Supporters this year mounted an aggressive and coordinated campaign that included organized labor, religious leaders, business owners and leaders including Chafee and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.

The bill's chances improved when Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed said she would allow the bill to move forward, despite her opposition to gay marriage. Earlier this week, the Senate's five Republicans announced they would all support the measure.

The first gay marriages in Rhode Island could take place Aug. 1, when the legislation would take effect. Civil unions would no longer be available to same-sex couples as of that date, though the state would continue to recognize existing civil unions. Lawmakers approved civil unions two years ago, though few couples have sought them.

Gay marriage legislation has been introduced in Rhode Island's General Assembly for nearly 20 years only to languish on the legislative agenda without a vote. Last fall, House Speaker Gordon Fox, who is gay, vowed to hold a vote early in the session, a move that focused the attention of supporters on the Senate.

Fox's chamber will now get the final say on the legislation, when the House is expected to sign off on minor changes the Senate made to the bill. A hearing on the bill is expected Tuesday, ahead of the House vote next Thursday.

"After all these years, all these setbacks, all the hearings, we kept at it and we got closer and closer each year," said Rep. Frank Ferri, D-Warwick, a gay man who lobbied for marriage legislation before he ran for office and is now one of the top supporters of the legislation. "I'm pumped. I'm excited. I'm thrilled. It's almost surreal."

Supporters framed the issue as one of civil rights, arguing in daylong legislative hearings that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same rights and protections given to opposite-sex married couples. The Catholic Church was the most significant opponent, with Bishop Thomas Tobin urging lawmakers to defeat what he called an "immoral and unnecessary" change to traditional marriage law.

The Rhode Island legislation states that religious institutions may set their own rules regarding who is eligible to marry within the faith and specifies that no religious leader is obligated to officiate at any marriage ceremony and no religious group is required to provide facilities or services related to a gay marriage.

While ministers already cannot be forced to marry anyone, the exemption helped assuage concerns from some lawmakers that clergy could face lawsuits for abiding by their religious convictions.

Delaware could be the next state to approve gay marriage. Legislation legalizing same-sex marriage narrowly passed the Delaware House on Tuesday and now heads to that state's Senate for consideration.

Before Wednesday's vote some supporters held up signs reading "Rhode Island No. 10." Annie Silvia, 61, of North Attleboro, Mass., just across the state line, said she and her partner of 30 years may retire to her home state of Rhode Island now.

"I grew up in Rhode Island and I'd like to retire in Rhode Island," she said. "No. 10 is a nice round number, but I'd like it to be bigger. Fifty sounds good to me."

Dogma among researchers exaggerates threat of resistance to best anti-malarial drugs, says malaria expert

Apr. 23, 2013 ? Exaggeration over the extent of the malaria parasite's resistance to the 'wonder drugs' artemisinins could jeopardise the fight against the disease, according to a leading expert.

In an opinion article published on World Malaria Day today (25 April 2013) -- online in the journal Trends in Parasitology, Professor Sanjeev Krishna of St George's, University of London argues that much of the evidence of the malaria parasite's resistance to artemisinin has been misinterpreted. He says this has led to the extent of artemisinin resistance being overstated, and that fears of its demise as an effective treatment are premature.

The artemisinin class of drugs are the best anti-malarial treatments available, and are used most effectively with other drugs as artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). Recent research has suggested that the malaria parasite is developing resistance to ACTs, particularly in Southeast Asia. Experts fear that if artemisinins became obsolete -- as previous anti-malarials have -- the effect could be devastating, as there are currently no other effective alternatives.

However, Professor Krishna argues that -- despite being accepted as dogma by the malaria research community -- most of the descriptions of artemisinin resistance do not meet the criteria by which resistance to other anti-malarials and drugs for other diseases have been measured.

For true resistance to exist, according to criteria used for other drugs, there needs to be: a significant failure in treatment (by not meeting the World Health Organization's target of a 95 per cent cure rate 28 days after treatment); a reduced sensitivity to the drug when the parasite is examined in the lab; and a visible delay in ridding the patient of parasites.

Currently, Professor Krishna says, it seems to be accepted that artemisinin treatment failure has occurred when a three-day course of ACT does not meet the target cure rate. This has been observed in a number of studies and has been used to try and understand 'artemisinin resistance.'

But other studies of seven-day courses of artemisinin monotherapies -- in which artemisinins are used alone, without partner drugs -- have shown up to 100 per cent cure rates after 28 days.

This, Professor Krishna, says, indicates proof of resistance to ACTs, but that there is no compelling evidence that artemisinins themselves are becoming less effective. He says this resistance will usually "be to a combination of an artemisinin with another drug against which there is usually a high background of resistance already."

"Contending that there is artemisinin resistance when cure of patients relies on the partner drug of an artemisinin is difficult to substantiate without additional studies," writes Professor Krishna. "It is more appropriate to describe the lack of observed efficacy as resistance to an artemisinin combination therapy rather than as being artemisinin resistance."

He adds that "crying wolf" and raising fears of artemisinin resistance when it is not yet proven "will itself have significant costs, so that when the wolf finally turns up, exhausted villagers no longer respond."

To ensure better understanding of when true artemisinin resistance occurs, and to learn how to fight it, Professor Krishna says there needs to be further research into the how the drugs work against the parasite. He also urges the development of molecular markers to predict the failure of the partner drugs used in ACTs, as well as further studies on artemisinin monotherapies.

How To Build Lists Through Email Marketing | Starting-Business

How To Build Lists Through Email Marketing

How To Build Lists Through Email Marketing

It is likely that you have been the recipient of marketing emails previously. Email marketing gives you the ability to both work to retain current customers while also engaging potential customers. Keep reading to find out how email marketing can work for you.

Carefully select the best time to send your messages, based on the needs of your readers. For example, a newsletter that has to do with business does best if it?s distributed during business days. Newsletters related to leisure time or families will be most successful when sent out on the weekend.

Your marketing emails need to stay short. Your language should be as direct as possible. This will show the reader that you respect how much their time is worth. This is also effective at making readers more likely to go over the whole message. Although your most important information should be at the top of the email, there are always important links and content near the end as well.

All images included in the messages should be tagged with Alt data. If the image does not load, the Alt tag will be helpful. The tag should appropriately describe the missing image. You should also use descriptions for your links.

Your email?s subject line should jump out at the reader and make them want to know more. Your customers should be excited when they read the subject line, so they want to open the email. Emails that have headlines or subjects which are suspicious will be deleted or remain unopened.

Do not use email messages that require graphical elements in order to present key facts. Images are frequently not displayed automatically by many email clients, particularly web-based ones. This can make your messages ugly or even unreadable if they are too reliant on images. You should always present vital information in plain text, and make certain that all of your images utilize alt tags.

You should think about combining your email campaigns with other marketing techniques, such as social media marketing. These networks make it easier for customers to share your information with others, and you can grow your mailing list organically by interacting with visitors at your social networking sites, drumming up interest for your content.

SMS messages can be a great side kick to an email strategy. When used together, your readers are able to receive all of the information you wish them to have. Text messages will allow you to increase your brand awareness.

Keep up with your competitors? actions when it comes to their campaigns for email marketing. Signing up with their email lists is an easy way to accomplish this. By seeing what they?re doing, you will be able to make your emails better than theirs. See if you can find niches not addressed by your competition. If they are offering promotions, find ways to offer higher quality promotions.

With the increased use of email over the last decade, email marketing is known to most people now. By using simple email messages, companies can market their products and services. It can work very well as a marketing strategy if utilized right and that can be easily done by using the advice given to you in this article.

(AP) ? Long after just about every Miami Heat player left the practice court on Monday, LeBron James stayed behind for a 3-point shooting contest against Ray Allen and Mario Chalmers.

He yelled. He trash-talked.

And he won, getting to watch his teammates do 20 push-ups as his reward.

There is a certain irony in James staying on the court after practice to work on his shooting, especially since there are nights he controls games without looking to score. When he took 11 shots in an NBA Finals game two years ago, he became a lightning rod for criticism.

These days, an 11-shot game from James ? like what he had Sunday when the Heat won Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series against Milwaukee ? gets celebrated for effective brilliance. He's controlling the game in any number of ways, and will try to continue doing so when the Heat and Bucks meet in Game 2 of the best-of-seven matchup on Tuesday night in Miami.

"The narrative has changed about him, about our team," Heat forward Shane Battier said. "A championship changes that. I don't think LeBron's changed. That's who LeBron is. LeBron's going to make the smart basketball play. He's going to make the right play. If that entails him taking 11 shots and we win, he's going to do it. If it entails him taking 30 shots, he's going to do it."

James will likely be named as the NBA's MVP for the fourth time in five seasons sometime in the not-too-distant future, and with each season, he still seems to be getting better.

He made 9 of 11 shots on Sunday in Miami's 110-87 win, finishing with 27 points and two assists shy of a triple-double. In his first seven-plus seasons, James never shot better than 75 percent in any game in which he took more than 10 shots. Since April 2011, he's done it 11 times, including Sunday, and the Heat are 11-0 in those games.

"We don't take his talent for granted because he does whatever it takes to help you win," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

When the Bucks broke down film after Game 1, coach Jim Boylan paid particular attention to the way his team defended James, a job that fell largely onto the shoulders of Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

Boylan raved about Mbah a Moute's effort after seeing that film. James was just too good in Game 1.

"It's hard to say, 'You didn't do this, you didn't do that' because Luc was into him the whole time," Boylan said. "LeBron just had a great game."

So now the trick for the Bucks ? who are 1-4 against Miami this season ? is finding ways to get Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis some help on the offensive end. Jennings and Ellis combined for 48 points in Game 1; their teammates chipped in only 39 more.

If that becomes a trend, the Bucks know they'll be on vacation by early next week.

"No one's in a panic," Boylan said. "We've played one game. It's time for us to take a look and see what we can do and figure out how we can help those guys."

There were some encouraging signs for the Bucks on Monday.

Center Larry Sanders, who has battled back pain in recent weeks and was marred by foul trouble that kept him from finding anything close to a rhythm in Game 1, said he felt as good Monday ? 80 percent right was his estimation ? as he has in a while. And Boylan said Ersan Ilyasova, who has dealt with a wrist problem, shouldn't still be adversely affected by that issue.

"For us, I don't think we look at it as it's a seven-game series and we've got to win four out of seven," Bucks forward Mike Dunleavy said. "We've got to win one game. When we win one game, then we'll say, 'Hey, we've got to win another one game.' To look at it as a whole and say we've got to beat these guys four times out of seven when they haven't lost four times out of 50, it's monumental."

That team that Dunleavy said hasn't lost four times out of 50 ? actually, the Heat are 43-4 in their last 47 games ? looked at itself with very critical eyes on Monday.

The videotape session that Spoelstra arranged for the Heat at the start of practice Monday lasted an hour, and the clips were not ones the team particularly enjoyed seeing. A night loaded with mistakes were on display in high-definition. Some, including Dwyane Wade, said the scene had a day-after-a-loss feel.

And remember, it was actually after a 23-point win.

"That's one thing Coach Spo does a great job of," Wade said. "He's always making sure that we move on and we move into the new moment. That moment has passed. That's one thing he's been very consistent at."

One area where the Heat struggled in Game 1 was 3-point shooting, where they went 7 for 23. So maybe that was why James lured Allen and Chalmers into that post-practice contest.

He would yell at his shots, pleading with them to "Get up" or "Sit down." When Chalmers or Allen would miss, James would shout "That's what I needed." And when he took his final attempt, the one that clinched the game, James knew he'd won when the ball was still in flight, saying "Game time" just before the shot went down.

"I've got to stay ready, I guess," James said. "I've got to stay ready."

Stop Blogging, Stop Marketing. It's Not Working. - ClickNewz!

Coming up with blog topics, struggling through the actual content writing, posting your links to every social networking site, doing "SEO" and market research, studying and trying every marketing strategy you can find, etc - it's boring. It's stressful, frustrating, and makes you want to pull your hair out.

You just want to get more traffic and make more sales online, but it's hard work! Even if it IS working, you're probably investing entirely too much time, for too small a return. Would you agree?

This may sound outrageous, but - stop blogging. And for that matter, stop marketing too. Trust me on this. I'm about to share a secret that will make your online business FUN again...

See the photo above? That's me on the left, enjoying a slice of pizza in Atlanta with several people from my Private Brainstorming Group. I like to attend events and meetups around the world every chance I get, and meet people in person that I've gotten to know online through my work. It has really personalized my business!

And that leads me to this HOT tip that could make a BIG difference in yours...

Stop blogging, Stop Marketing, and Start Talking.

Blogging is not fun. It's work. But talking about a topic you're passionate about, now that's fun! And chances are, you're pretty good at talking about your business or the topic of your blog/site. If that isn't the case, you're in the wrong niche.

I find it easiest to talk about various topics in a more casual setting. Staring at a blank screen trying to write a blog post puts the pressure on. You're trying to get all the elements right, and you're focused on "writing a good blog post."

But if you're sitting around a table on a beautiful afternoon having pizza, you could talk for hours on end about your topic! I know I can...

The same goes for forums, discussion groups, etc. You probably share valuable advice and great tips when you're in "conversational mode" whether online or offline.

And it comes easy, right?

I use this to my advantage when it comes to creating content, and also when marketing my business online. The trick is to get in that conversational mode. Having met so many people offline and in real life, I find it easiest to imagine those scenarios when we're talking in person - with specific faces in mind.

Even if you don't get out to meetups and events, you likely interact with your target market on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, forums and other social sites around the web. You get to know people, you see their pictures and know what they look like, and you have a feel for who they are as individuals.

THAT is who you need to write TO.

Pick one person you have interacted with in your niche, and write specifically to them when you create blog posts and email your list. The same goes for your social media profiles too - start posting updates, sharing valuable tips, asking questions, and engaging your "followers" with real conversation!

If you stop trying to blog, and stop trying to promote your site, and just start talking... two things will happen. First, it will come much easier! Second, you'll see a much better response rate from your market.

Forget strategies and tricks and methods. Your online business should be built around you, and your business should thrive from serving your market.

Talk TO them, not AT them.

If you have a hard time writing a blog post, press release, article, guest post, email newsletter, etc - try this:

Imagine that someone has just emailed you a question. Or that they called you on the phone. Or that you are responding to a question in a niche forum.

Now... respond freely. Not only does it make the task of writing MUCH easier, your "response" will be a much better - and more appealing - piece of content than you could ever write out of thin air for a blank screen.

Just publishing content and posting it around the web is not going to make you stand out in your niche. You really need to go the extra mile and get actively engaged with your market.

Don't get caught up in the "tasks" such as blogging and posting. Get caught up in your market and what they're talking about. Your "market" is made up of REAL PEOPLE. Figure out what they need or want, and how you can best help them.

Stop "blogging" and start talking. That's the key! ;-)

Best,

p.s. If you DO struggle with writing or blogging, and we *all* do from time to time!, here are some great posts that will help you out when you're feeling stuck:

DNP Google's One Today app for Android lets you donate $1 to select nonprofit organizations

Google may be raking in the dough, but that doesn't mean the company is lacking a social conscience. Yesterday, the software giant silently released its One Today app for Android. Available in the US by invite only, the setup features a daily profile on a different nonprofit project and gives you the option to donate $1 to its cause. Payments require a Google Wallet account and gifting is currently limited to a buck per day. If you're looking to raise more capital for a specific cause, you can challenge friends via social networks to donate and then match their donations (up to a point). After all, this is about bringing networks of people together to bolster the spirit of giving. Check out the adjacent source link to apply for an app invite.
