UCD women?s tennis

The 64th-ranked Aggies won four of six singles matches ? two of them in three sets ? and rallied to upset No. 46 Cal Poly and snap the Mustangs? 13-match home winning streak on Sunday in a Big West contest.

The victory, which came after Cal Poly (4-2, 1-1) captured the doubles point, gave UCD (3-6, 1-1) a split of its weekend road trip.

The Aggies? win over the Mustangs, who last lost at home on April 2, 2010, was UCD?s first over Cal Poly in five matches since joining the Big West in 2007.

Layla Sanders and Dahra Zumudio battled hard in an 8-7 loss to the Mustang duo of Gabby Gatewood and Jen Cornea at No. 2, but it wasn?t enough as Cal Poly captured all three doubles matches.

The Aggies, however, rebounded with a spirited effort in singles, taking straight-set victories at No. 1 ? where Megan Heneghan beat Alex Lee, 6-3, 6-1 ?? and No.4, where Lauren Curry topped Gatewood 6-3, 6-3.

Zamudio and Sanders needed three sets to win their respective singles matches, with Sanders battling back to take the final two sets 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6, after dropping the first set 7-5.

Zamudio, playing at No. 2, beat Cornea, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3. Heneghan and Curry had unbeaten weekends in singles for UCD, which will return to?action on Friday, hosting Sacramento State at 1:30 p.m.

UCD men?s tennis

Toki Sherbakov posted a three-set victory at No. 1 singles in addition to a doubles win for the Aggies, but UCD fell 6-1 to Loyola Marymount on Sunday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

Sherbakov?s win was his third singles victory in a row and improved his overall record to 4-2 on the season for the Aggies (2-4).

Sherbakov and Chris Aria opened the match with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles and, after a loss the No. 2 position, UCD still the doubles point in sight, but Kyle Miller and Hugo Verdi-Fortin dropped a close 9-8 (8) decision to LMU?s No. 1 pair.

At No. 1 singles, Sherbakov posted a come-from-behind victory over Alex Wilton, getting a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph. Verdi-Fortin also extended his match to a third set, but fell to Daniel Simko, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.

The Aggies will be back in action Friday at home when they host Weber State in a 2 p.m. match.

UCD women?s soccer

The Aggies added three more student-athletes to their 2011 recruiting class after initially signing 10 prospects to national letters of intent.

Those 10 will be joined by Kelsey Birtcher from Murrieta Valley High, Sienna Drizin from Centennial High in Las Vegas and Katie Foster, who prepped at Modesto Christian.

UCD is coming off a strong 2011 season in which it tied for third in the Big West standings, finished with an 11-7-2 overall record and advanced to the conference tournament for the first time since moving to NCAA Division I status.

The first session is geared toward baseball and softball players ages 7 to 18 and will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, starting this week at the Sutter physical therapy clinic on Lake Boulevard.

Sessions are four to six weeks long and are open to all youth baseball and softball players. The cost is $60 to $90 per athlete for each session. Another weekday session will be added as needed to meet the demand. Players will be grouped by age.
