Report: Boeing to cut jobs at second Dreamliner plant

SEATTLE -- Boeing Co. will cut hundreds of jobs at a South Carolina plant that makes 787 Dreamliners over the course of this year, but the move has nothing to do with the recent grounding of the troubled jetliner, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The cuts, which chiefly target contract workers, are not uncommon as productivity improves on a new airplane program and were conceived before major problems with the 787s battery surfaced, the Journal said. Two high-profile battery malfunctions led to international aviation regulators grounding the jetliner in mid-January.

The cuts could account for up to 20 percent of the workforce in some teams at the plant in North Charleston, South Carolina, the Journal reported, citing an unnamed source familiar with the plan. Overall, the plant employs more than 6,000 people.

Boeing did not confirm the layoffs, but did tell Reuters it plans to reduce reliance on contract workers at the South Carolina plant.

"Boeing regularly uses contract labor and 'industry assist' to supplement its workforce during surge activities and on development programs that require a production ramp up - that's standard practice in the aerospace industry," said Marc Birtel, a Boeing spokesman. "As we progress in improving efficiencies in our processes, training our entry-level employees and growing the experience of our team in South Carolina, we expect to continue to reduce reliance on contract labor/industry assist to meet our production objectives."

The South Carolina plant is the second Boeing facility where 787s are assembled after the larger Everett, Washington, facility north of Seattle. Between them, Boeing turns out five Dreamliners per month.

So far, the plane maker has said production has not been slowed by the grounding of the 787 and it aims to fulfill its plan to ramp up to 10 787s per month by the end of 2013.

Samsung re-starts copier, announces Passbook for Android

Samsung announced their new Samsung Wallet today. The video above is from frAndroid, and here's Simon Sage's background on it from Android Central:

Samsung has announced a new API for developers to help manage event tickets, boarding passes, memberships, and coupons. Samsung Wallet will be a new application which brings all of these types of content into one place. Time and location-based push notifications will help users get a hold of the ticketing information.

If that sounds -- and looks -- familiar, it's because Apple already announced it back in June of 2012 as Passbook.

Samsung re-starts copier, announces Passbook for Android

It's not the first time Samsung's copied an Apple product, it's probably not even the hundred-and-first, though given their bolder, more authentic releases over the last year, it did seem to be something they were growing out of. Apple isn't adverse to copying features from Android either, though historically they haven't been as consistent or blatant about it.

Like with black slab designs I'm pretty much over any obsession with who's copying who, but I do think this smacks of laziness and a lack of pride.

I'm happy for Samsung users that they'll get to enjoy a feature that's been nifty, if limited so far, on iOS 6. But it shows Samsung really doesn't give a shit. Passbook is certainly not the only way to tackle a digital wallet, and it may not even be the best way. By relentlessly copying, Samsung isn't moving the technology forward. They're not raising the bar. They're not making a wallet interface and experience so good anyone is begging for Apple to copy them.

I own a Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, which have LG and Asus designs, and Google software, and I'm currently waiting for an HTC One (love HTC). I have little interest in Samsung products, and it's mostly because of stuff like this. And I want to have interest in Samsung. I want a better Samsung.

Obviously Samsung's making all the money in Android these days, and their upcoming Galaxy S4 will no doubt be an unprecedented hit, so they probably don't care.

But they really, really should.

Head of Mexico's powerful teachers' union arrested

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The head of Mexico's powerful teachers' union was arrested at an airport near Mexico City Tuesday for alleged embezzlement, with federal officials accusing her of using union funds to pay for plastic surgery, to buy a house in San Diego and even to pay her bill at Neiman Marcus.

Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said that Elba Esther Gordillo, who has led the 1.5 million-member National Union of Education Workers for 23 years, was detained in Toluca on charges that she embezzled 2 billion pesos (about $160 million) from union funds.

The office didn't say whether Gordillo, a colorful woman long seen as a kingmaker and power-behind-the-scenes in Mexico, was arriving or leaving Toluca airport, or whether she was handcuffed. Murrillo said two other people were also arrested by did not name them.

The arrest of the 68-year-old Gordillo marks the downfall of a woman who rose from being a school teacher to one of Mexico's most powerful political operators, displaying her opulence openly with designer clothes and bags, bodyguards, expensive cars and properties including a penthouse apartment in Mexico City's exclusive Polanco neighborhood. She has been widely lampooned for her many plastic surgeries and depicted in political cartoons as ghoulish.

Meanwhile, Mexico's teachers are poorly paid and public education has long been considered sub-par.

"We are looking at a case in which the funds of education workers have been illegally misused, for the benefit of several people, among them Elba Esther Gordillo," Murillo Karam said.

Gordillo did not respond publicly to the accusations against her and was reportedly en route to Mexico City to appear before a judge.

Her detention came a day after President Enrique Pena Nieto signed Mexico's most sweeping education reform in seven decades into law, seeking to change a system dominated by Gordillo in which teaching positions could be sold or inherited.

Prosecutors said they had detected nearly $3 million in purchases at Neiman Marcus using those funds, as well as $17,000 in U.S. plastic surgery bills and the purchase of a million-dollar home in San Diego.

Assistant Attorney General Alfredo Castillo displayed a series of charts at the press conference with arrows detailing the allegations of illicit transfers from teachers' union accounts to personal accounts in the names of three union workers, Nora Guadalupe Ugarte Ramirez, Isaias Gallardo Chavez and Jose Manuel Diaz Flores, as well as a real estate company.

None were authorized to deal with finances. It wasn't clear if they were among those arrested.

"Between 2008 and 2012, there was systematic embezzlement of union accounts," Murillo Karam said.

Some funds eventually ended up in bank accounts in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Castillo said that in one case they transferred $1 million to a Swiss account for a company owned by Gordillo's mother. Those funds were then used to buy a million-dollar house in the island of Coronado in San Diego.

The overhaul of Mexico's education system was Pena Nieto's first major proposal since taking office Dec. 1 and was considered a political blow to Gordillo.

Gordillo had organized a string of protests by teachers against the reform, which moves much of the control of the education system to the federal government from the teachers' union. Gordillo was elected to another six-year term as union leader in October.

The reform creates a system of uniform standards for teacher hiring and promotion based on merit instead of union connections. It also allows for the first census of Mexico's education system, which Gordillo's union has largely controlled for decades, allegedly padding the payroll with thousands of phantom teachers.

So great is the union's control that no one knows exactly how many schools, teachers or students exist in Mexico.

For years, she has beaten back attacks from union dissidents, political foes and journalists who have seen her as a symbol of Mexico's corrupt, old-style politics. Rivals have accused her of corruption, misuse of union funds and even a murder, but prosecutors who investigated never brought a charge against her.

She was expelled from Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party in 2006 for supporting other parties' candidates and the formation of her own New Alliance party.

Gordillo's arrest recalled the 1989 arrest of another once-feared union boss, Joaquin Hernandez Galicia, known as "La Quina." The longtime head of Mexico's powerful oil workers union, Hernandez Galicia was arrested during the first months of the new administration of then-President Carlos Salinas.

Like Gordillo, Hernandez Galicia's power was believed to represent a challenge to the president, and his arrest was interpreted as an assertion of the president's authority. He was freed from prison after Salinas de Gortari left office.

In 1988, he criticized Salinas' presidential candidacy and threatened an oil workers' strike if Salinas privatized any part of the government oil monopoly, Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex. On Jan. 10, 1989, ? about a month after Salinas took office ? soldiers used a bazooka to blow down the door of Hernandez' home in the Gulf Coast city of Ciudad Madero.

Obama warns spending cuts could idle shipbuilder

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is arguing that looming government-wide spending cuts could idle military resources like naval aircraft carriers, while Republicans are criticizing the president for taking his arguments outside Washington instead of staying to work out a plan before Friday's deadline.

The president planned to appear Tuesday at Virginia's largest industrial employer, Newport News Shipbuilding, which would be affected by cuts to naval spending. Obama warned Monday that if the so-called sequester goes into effect later this week, the company's "workers will sit idle when they should be repairing ships, and a carrier sits idle when it should be deploying to the Persian Gulf."

Obama urged Congress to compromise to avoid the cuts, but there has been no indication the White House and congressional Republicans are actively negotiating a deal. The last known conversation between Obama and GOP leaders was last week, and there have been no in-person meetings between the parties this year.

Obama wants the replace the sequester with a package of targeted cuts and tax increases, while Republican leaders insist the savings should come from reduced spending alone.

Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, chair of the House Republican Conference, criticized Obama for traveling to southern Virginia rather than up the street to Capitol Hill to come up with a solution.

"We need the president to stop campaigning for higher taxes, come back here to Washington, D.C., and lead," McMorris Rodgers said during a press conference Monday with GOP leaders.

The sequester was designed as an unpalatable fallback, meant to take effect only if a congressional super-committee failed to come up with at least $1 trillion in savings from benefit programs.

The White House has warned the $85 billion in cuts could affect everything from commercial flights to classrooms to meat inspections. The cuts would slash domestic and defense spending, leading to furloughs for hundreds of thousands of workers.

The cuts also would impact Newport News Shipbuilding, which builds and maintains the nation's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers as well as other warships. The Navy has already delayed a long-planned overhaul of the USS Abraham Lincoln at the shipyard as a result of the budget uncertainty, and other plans call for delaying the construction of other ships.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., offered a potential way out of the stalemate Monday by indicating he was open to raising tax revenue if Obama offered to overhaul big-ticket entitlement programs. Many Republicans say they are done raising revenue after letting taxes on top earners increase in December.

"I'll raise revenue. Will you reform entitlements?" Graham said in a challenge to the president on CNN. "And both together, we'll set aside sequestration in a way that won't disrupt the economy and hurt the Defense Department."

Scientists May Have Uncovered Ancient Microcontinent

The remains of a small continent have been hiding right under our noses for the past 85 million years or so.

That's according to a new study published Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience. Scientists looked at lava sands from beaches on Mauritius to determine when and where the material might have originated.

Their conclusion? The lava sands, containing particles called zircon xenocrysts, came from a Precambrian microcontinent dubbed "Mauritia" that was sandwiched between the land masses that today make up Madagascar and India. It was all part of a supercontinent known as Rodinia that existed between 2 billion and 85 million years ago. (Not to be confused with the better known and slightly more contemporary supercontinent Pangaea).

Mauritia was a sliver of land that broke apart and disappeared under the sea as the Rodinia ripped itself apart as part of the process of plate tectonics, scientists believe.

The BBC quotes the study's lead author, Trond Torsvik, as saying the sand his team examined dates to a 9-million-year-old eruption near the modern-day islands of Marion and Reunion that spewed much older material.

"We found zircons that we extracted from the beach sands, and these are something you typically find in a continental crust. They are very old in age," said Torsvik of the University of Oslo in Norway.

Torsvik believes pieces of Mauritia have been interred under 6 miles of surface and spread over a swath of the Indian Ocean, according to the BBC.

"However, a small part could have survived.

" 'At the moment the Seychelles is a piece of granite, or continental crust, which is sitting practically in the middle of the Indian Ocean,' explained Prof Torsvik.

" 'But once upon a time, it was sitting north of Madagascar. And what we are saying is that maybe this was much bigger, and there are many of these continental fragments that are spread around in the ocean.' "

California Democrats lose supermajority in state Senate

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Democrats who control California's legislature lost their supermajority in the state Senate on Friday when a business-friendly moderate from the state's Central Valley abruptly resigned.

Senator Michael Rubio, elected in 2010, said he was stepping down to take a job with Chevron Corp, which will leave fellow Democrats with 26 seats in the Senate. Two other Democratic-leaning seats in the 40-member Senate are vacant.

Rubio had been expected to spearhead the effort to overhaul environmental laws in a more business-friendly fashion.

With the loss of the 27-seat supermajority, Democrats will have to put on hold, at least temporarily, some of their more ambitious plans opposed by the Senate's Republican minority. Rubio is likely to be replaced by a member of his party in a special election.

Democrats in the November election won supermajorities in the Senate and Assembly, which notably gave them the power to pass tax hikes or put constitutional amendments before voters on their own.

Prior to the election, Democratic lawmakers had to court Republican colleagues to be able to reach the required two-thirds vote of the legislature to approve bills to raise taxes, efforts all too often snubbed by anti-tax GOP lawmakers.

Rubio had planned to lead efforts to change the California Environmental Quality Act. He chaired an environmental issues committee seen as key to overhauling the law.

Governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, also is in favor of changes to the 40-year-old law. Its critics have long held the law can be used to impose costly delays on construction projects.

Campbell's conga line golf putt

Nine golfers lined up for a putt at a single hole.

You might have already seen the now-viral video of nine Campbell golfers standing in line and hitting nine putts simultaneously into the same hole.

You might not know the back story, though. It started when Nathan Mead became president of the PGA Golf Management Student Association (PGMSA) at Campbell University last semester and said that he wanted to: ?Do Big Things.?

He thought that competitions between classes would help draw students from the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business? PGA Golf Management University Program (CUPGM) closer together, and the conga-line trick shot was what the seniors came up with.

It?s safe to say the seniors won that round.

The Midwest Is One Big Snowy Wreck Right Now

It's snow season in America, and although the East Coast has been hogging all the weather-attention this year, the Midwest put Blizzard Nemo to shame on Thursday. It's not so much that the storm system moving through the central United States dumped more snow on the ground. This week's storm simply dumped snow on more ground, affecting 20 states over the course of an hour. CNN put the scope of the storm in startling terms, "About 60 million people -- 20% of the U.S. population -- were under winter weather warnings, watches and advisories in the 750,000 square miles affected." And yes, there was thundersnow. It even snowed in the middle of the Arizona desert.

RELATED: The Best Ways to Track the Big Blizzard

The real challenge of this week's Midwest wallop is that many of the states affected, like Missouri ?and Kansas, aren't accustomed to getting big snow storms. A month ago it was in the 70s in Kansas City. Nowhere was hit harder than the highways, where the snow accumulated so quickly that the cars couldn't get to safety quick enough. This left cars sliding into snow drifts and?trucks jackknifed and helpless on the highway. Kansas actually closed a 240-mile stretch of the Interstate and dispatched two dozen National Guard soldiers to search for travelers stranded in the mayhem. "If you don't have to travel, don't do it," said the state's governor, Sam Brownback. He reiterated, "If you don't have to get out, just really, please, don't do it." Nevertheless at least two deaths attributed to storm has been reported, both from car accidents.

RELATED: The Supermarket Apocalypse Is Upon Us

The good news is that snow is precipitation, which the plains states desperately need. The region's been struggling with droughts for what seems like years now ? global warming, ahem ? and several inches of snow melt amounts to some much appreciated respite. "We can get excited about it," one farmer told The New York Times. "But we're going to have to have more moisture, however it comes."

Rubio, on Mideast trip, says Jerusalem is Israel's capital

    Wednesday, February 20, 2013 - 2:38pm

(CNN) -- Sen. Marco Rubio told Israeli leaders Wednesday he was glad President Barack Obama would be visiting the Jewish state this spring, and waded into the politically sensitive subject of Jerusalem's status as the capital of Israel.

Ahead of his meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem, Rubio said of the city, "Of course the capital of your country but the spiritual capital of million around the world."

American policy has long been intentionally vague on the status of Jerusalem. A U.S. law passed in 1995 designates Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and stipulates the American embassy should move to the city from Tel Aviv. The past three presidents, however, have signed waivers suspending the law, citing security and diplomatic concerns.

Israelis consider Jerusalem the capital of their country, but Palestinians also claim rights to the city as the capital of a future independent state. The status of the city is designated for final negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

On Wednesday, Rubio stressed the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship, and said both Democrats and Republicans were united in supporting the country.

"At a time when few things unite Democrats and Republicans in Washington, I'm pleased that Israel is one of them and excited about the fact that the president will visit here in March and it will be a very productive visit," Rubio said.

In a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Rubio also hailed the relationship between the United States and Israel.

"You live in a challenging neighborhood, but the Israeli-American relationship is one of the most important ones we have, and certainly our commitment to that partnership is bipartisan and it should remain that way," the Florida Republican told Benjamin Netanyahu during a meeting in Jerusalem. "And that's why I'm pleased the president is coming here in March."

Netanyahu told Rubio that he appreciated "the tremendous support of the American people, bipartisan support for our security and our quest for peace."

"It's a daunting task, both security and the quest for peace, but we know we have your support and we appreciate it. I look forward to talking with you about our challenges," Netanyahu continued.

The prime minster's office posted a video with the brief exchange between the two politicians on its official YouTube page.

Rubio is midway through a trip through the region that started in Jordan. In addition to meeting with Netanyahu, Rubio was also slated to sit down with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. In Jordan, he will meet with King Abdullah.

Rubio serves on both the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees and said before his trip that he planned to speak with the Israeli leaders about the peace process with Palestinians and Egypt.

"America's friendship with Israel is a truly special one, and we must continue to do all we can to support this beacon of democracy, religious freedom and free enterprise in the heart of an unstable region," Rubio said in a statement on Saturday announcing his trip. "As Iran continues its pursuit of a nuclear weapon, we must continue to apply pressure through every possible means in order to prevent a nuclear Iran."

In Jordan, he is "interested in learning more firsthand about the impact the Syrian civil war and how the humanitarian crisis that has resulted is impacting Jordan and the region."

Rubio said his wife Jeanette would accompany him on the trip but not at taxpayer expense. He has previously visited Israel.

Pa. hospital gets shoeshine tips totaling $200,000

(AP) ? A shoeshine man has given a Pittsburgh children's hospital a total of more than $200,000 in tips he's collected over the last 30 years.

Albert Lexie says he's been shining shoes for $5 at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh since the early 1980s. He says most customers tip him $1 and some give him an extra $2. He says a doctor gave him a $50 bill for Christmas.

WTAE-TV (http://bit.ly/136jx4X ) says Lexie gives all his tip money to the hospital's sick children.

Dr. Joseph Carcillo says Lexie has donated more than a third of his lifetime salary to the Children's Hospital Free Care Fund, which helps parents who can't afford to pay their sick children's medical costs.

Lexie has been shining shoes since the 1950s. He says, "It's good to be a hero."

In info age, Belgian diamond heist is a throwback

LONDON (AP) ? At a time when many robberies take place at the click of a mouse, a group of jewel thieves has shown there's still a potential payoff for old-fashioned criminals willing to use disguises, planning and pluck to nab their loot.

Monday's theft of some $50 million worth of diamonds from the tarmac of Brussels' international airport is a "huge blip on the radar," said retired FBI agent Bill Rehder, who spent more than three decades on Los Angeles' bank robbery squad.

"You can almost liken it to the meteor that hit in Russia," he said, referring to the space rock which exploded last week over the city of Chelyabinsk, injuring hundreds. "These things happen so infrequently, but when they do happen it's a huge story."

It's also the type of story that complicates trends that have seen many crimes ? particularly those targeting banks ? jump from the world of brandished weapons and ransom notes to a universe of Trojan software and password-stealing computer programs.

In several Western countries, robberies have fallen as banks have installed bullet-proof glass, access-control vestibules and cash boxes rigged with paint or glue. Rehder said that, in the United States, tougher sentencing for criminals and societal changes have also led to a drop in bank robberies, which shrank from 8,516 in 2001 to 5,086 in 2011.

That trend has been echoed across the Atlantic, with the British Bankers' Association recording an even more dramatic fall in the number of raids, from 232 to 66 in the same period. Europe-wide figures also show a decrease in the number of bank robberies.

Meanwhile, cybercriminals have stepped in to steal some of the money their gun-wielding colleagues have left behind.

Global figures are hard to come by, but the amounts in play can be huge. In 2010, the FBI announced the unraveling of an online organization that had raked in roughly $70 million through a vast network of hackers, money mules, and front companies. Dozens were arrested across the U.S., Britain, and Eastern Europe.

ATM skimming, in which criminals surreptitiously rig cash machines with card readers and cameras to harvest debit card numbers, is another threat.

Doug Johnson, the vice president of risk management at the American Bankers Association, said that while the average U.S. bank robber could expect to make out with $3,000-4,000 from each theft, a skimmer made 10 times that amount with every successful hit.

Even as criminality mutates to fit the new realities of online finance and cashless wallets, spectacular thefts like the one in Belgium carry a special air of romance, Rehder said.

"This will catch the imagination of the public, no doubt about it," Rehder said, explaining that the use of bogus police vehicles to rob a plane right as it prepared to take off fit right in with the mystique of 1960s heist movies, released long before many of today's online criminals were born.

And security experts said that capers in the vein of "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968) or "Ocean's Eleven" (1960) ? elaborate schemes involving the surgical extraction of jewels, rare artwork, and cash ? were likely to keep popping up well into the information age.

"As long as we have hard currency and value in precious stones and precious metals, we're going to have people who will try to take it," Rehder said.

Or, as Johnson put it, "it's frankly difficult to create virtual robbery of diamonds."

Oscar Pistorius' agent cancels all future races

Antoine De Ras / Redux Pictures

Oscar Pistorius known as the 'Blade Runner' appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court for allegedly killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in a shooting incident.

By Alastair Jamieson and Andrew Mach, Staff writers, NBC News

UPDATED: 4:30 p.m. ET: The management company of ?Blade Runner? Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius, who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, has cancelled all of his future races, according to a statement released Sunday.

?I have decided that following these tragic events that we have no option but to cancel all future races that Oscar Pistorius had been contracted to compete in, to allow Oscar to concentrate on the upcoming legal proceedings and to help and support all those involved as they try to come to terms with this very difficult and distressing situation,? Pistorius' agent?Peet Van Zyl?said in a statement.

Pistorius had been contracted to compete in five races between March 9 and May 25 in Australia, Brazil, the United States and England.

Van Zyl said that all of Pistorius? partners and sponsors were supportive and their contractual commitments remain intact, but ?they are happy to let the legal process take its course before making any change in their position.?

Pistorius was charged on Friday with murdering Steenkamp at his home, although the athlete vehemently denied the accusation in a statement issued by his agent on Friday.

A reality television show featuring Steenkamp was aired in South Africa Saturday night, two days after she was killed.

A pre-recorded clip on the ?Tropika Island of Treasure? show featured the law graduate talking about her "exit" from the series, which is filmed in the Caribbean.

As Pistorius spends his fourth day in jail, more details are emerging of what allegedly happened inside his home early that morning, NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

"I think that the way you go out, not just your journey in life but the way that you go out and you make your exit is so important," she said in the clip ? words which have a new meaning in light of her death, in the early hours of Thursday.

Speaking directly to the camera, she said: "I'm gonna miss you all so much. And I love you very, very much."

As Pistorius remained in a Pretoria police station awaiting his next bail hearing on Tuesday, media reports carried more lurid details about the events surrounding Steenkamp?s death.

South African newspaper? The Sunday Tribune reported claims?by an un-named female friend of Pistorius that he called her frantically asking for help after the shooting, while?UK newspaper The People published an interview?with the athlete?s friend, Justin Divaris.

Divaris told the newspaper Pistorius had also called him in a panic ? even before he had called police.

The newspaper said Divaris saw a hysterical Pistorius being detained by cops at the house. ?He was totally incoherent and just kept saying, ?My baba, I?ve killed my baba. God take me away?,? he was quoted as saying.

A pastor who visited Pistorius at the police station on Sunday said he was still distraught.

"I'm gonna miss you all so much! And I love you very, very much," Reeva Steenkamp, slain girlfriend of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, said in a show that aired after she was found shot to death. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

"The Holy Spirit gave me an order that this is now the chance to go pray with Oscar," pastor AJ Wilson told Reuters outside the police station.

"The (police) colonel told him that I have come to pray with him. He just cried and we all cried together."

Pistorius? uncle, Arnold,?on Saturday said the Paralympian was ?numb with shock, as well as grief?.

There was anger in South African at the decision by broadcaster SABC to air the reality show, Reuters reported ? particularly as Steenkamp will not be buried until Tuesday.

"It was very insensitive to put it on air before she was even buried," said 30-year-old insurance consultant Montle Ndlovu, according to Reuters. "It's such a sad story. She was young and pretty and had her whole life in front of her."?

    Reuters contributed to this report.

G20 finance chiefs in exchange rate pledge

MOSCOW (AP) ? Finance chiefs from the world's 20 leading industrial and developing countries attempted Saturday to calm fears that governments are using foreign exchange as an economic weapon by pledging not to weaken their currencies to gain an advantage in global trade.

The two-day meeting in Moscow ended Saturday with a joint communique that included a promise that the G20 members would "refrain from competitive devaluation" and "resist all forms of protectionism and keep our markets open."

There has recently been widespread unease among investors and politicians over developments affecting the Japanese yen, which now trades near a three-year low. Japan is facing charges that it is trying first and foremost to lower the value of the yen to stimulate its economy and get the edge over other countries.

If too many countries try to weaken their currencies for economic gain ? sparking a so-called "currency war" ? the fragile global recovery could be derailed.

"We reiterate that excess volatility of financial flows and disorderly movements in exchange rates have adverse implications for economic and financial stability," the communique added ? using the same language as a statement on the same subject made earlier this week by the Group of 7 leading economies.

Neither statement singled out any country ? including Japan ? for criticism.

Speaking at a news conference following the communique's signing, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that all the G20 nations agreed that they need to focus on delivering a strong economic growth rather than "manipulating the markets."

International Monetary Fund director Christine Lagarde, dismissed concerns of a looming currency war, saying that she was witnessing "currency worries, not currency wars."

A U.S. senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not allowed to comment publicly said that the group discussed the importance of avoiding loose talk concerning exchange rates ? although this point did not make it into the communique.

Several developing economies have recently criticized the U.S. program of quantitative easing for pushing up the value of their currencies. By buying up bonds, the U.S. Federal Reserve has also increased the amount of money in circulation. This has had the side-effect of driving down the value of that currency relative to others.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke defended the policy in a speech at a meeting of G20 financial chiefs with President Vladimir Putin on Friday.

"Consistent with the Group of 7 statement, the United States is using domestic policy tools to advance domestic objectives and we believe that by strengthening the U.S. economy, we're helping to strengthen the global economy as well," he said.

Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at the Martin Smith School of Business at California State University, said it should come as no surprise that no country was singled out for criticism for movements in its currency.

"Many countries including China, Japan and the United States all have issues related to exchange rates," he said. "People in glass houses should not throw stones."

As Russia's Siluanov told reporters after the meeting, the G20 nations share "an understanding" of Japan's current policies aimed at getting its economy motoring again after a two-decade bout of stagnation.

"We agreed that it was a domestic matter of that country," he said.

The Moscow meeting also ended with a pledge to crack down on tax avoidance by multinational companies. Google, Amazon and Starbucks have recently come under criticism from countries including France, the U.K. and Germany for shifting profits generated in one country to another to pay less tax.

In their communique, the G20 finance ministers said they were determined to take "necessary collective actions" to stop the practice.

The G20 ministers also decided to defer setting any new debt-cutting targets for its members. G20 members at a 2010 summit in Toronto committed to halve budget deficits by this year and it is now looking likely that some countries will fail on that commitment.

The U.S. senior administration official said Saturday that, while the U.S. had met its commitment, G20 members decided not to sign up to any new tangible goals or targets in Saturday's communique as they were anxious to depart from a "one-size-fits-all" approach.

USC's Clowney Inquires About $5 Million Insurance Policy

    jadeveon-clowney-helmet-off-meanWell this one?s a no-brainer.

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is reportedly considering taking out a $5 million insurance policy to protect him in case of serious injury on the football field.? The junior-to-be is expected to be the top pick in the NFL draft if/when he comes out early in 2014.? Whether or not he should risk injury by playing at all this fall has become a national talking point this week.? (Clowney and USC coach Steve Spurrier say he will definitely play.? NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper says he shouldn?t have to.)

FoxSports.com reported yesterday that Richard ?Big Daddy? Salgado ? the president of a company called Coastal Advisors, LLC ? told the site that ?a member of Clowney?s camp? had inquired with his company about the possibility of setting up the large policy.? Salgado?s group has reportedly ?insured and guided? 35 other college athletes over the past 15 years.

And if you?re looking for insurance, wouldn?t you turn to man called Big Daddy?

The debate over whether or not Clowney should play has been fueled in part by the devastating injury suffered by South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore last season.? His draft stock has taken a hit following following his October knee injury.

But Spurrier believes there?s a difference between Clowney and Lattimore:

    ?

?He?s really good about avoiding injuries and so forth. He knows how to get out of harm?s way if there?s a big pileup around a tackle. I think the odds of him getting hurt are not nearly as much as a running back or somebody like that.?

    ?

Makes one wonder what Spurrier would have said if some in the media had questioned a year ago whether or not Lattimore should play his junior season.

Update: Richard Salgado clarified his comments this morning:??Let me get one point straight right off the bat: I did not write any insurance on him,? Salgado said. ?An inquiry was made about him to me, and that was it. Now, was it a family member (who made the inquiry)? Was it an agent? Was it anybody like that? No. I don?t even know. You get all these people that call and say they?re the advisor to these kids, and 90 percent of the time, they?re lying. I?m the biggest provider of insurance in this business of sports. People ask me a lot of things.?
