Mpls Golf Pro Headed To PGA Championship

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? One of golf?s biggest tournaments, the PGA Championship is Aug. 5-11 in Rochester, New York.

A Twin Cities PGA golf pro Jeff Sorenson ? who makes his living teaching others how to golf ? is playing in it.

Sorenson?s one of only 20 teaching pros in the entire country to qualify to play in the PGA Championship, one of golf?s four majors.

?It was awesome,? he said. ?It was really cool.?

He made the cut by placing third in the national championship for PGA pros.

His brother, Matt, knows how rare the feat is.

?I know that it?s very rare,? he said. ?Because just making it to the professional national championship is a hard feat in itself, and then to make the cut there is even a bigger feat, because it?s such a huge field. And then to actually finish in the top 20 of that tournament, you know, it speaks for itself.?

Sorenson isn?t a pro at Hazeltine or Interlachen or TPC. He?s at Columbia Golf Club, a municipal course in Minneapolis, and a sense of pride that comes with that.

?Sometimes people think that the better players are going to come from certain clubs, but it doesn?t really work that way,? he said.

This will actually be his second time in the PGA Championship, as he missed the cut after two rounds in 2011.

?But my goal this year isn?t just to make the cut,? he said. ?I want to contend. If I play my best golf, I know I can.?

Sorenson will also get a trip to England out of the deal.

He qualified to be one of 10 Americans to represent team USA, against the British/Irish team in a Ryder Cup-style tournament for club pros, later this year.
