Mayor Michael Bloomberg is taking the next steps in his fight against obesity, urging New Yorkers to take the stairs.

The mayor is proposing bills to increase visibility and access to staircases.

He also issued an executive order requiring city agencies to take physical activity into consideration when designing new buildings and renovations.

"Nobody's gonna tell you how to live, but all of these things, no matter how much some people want to make fun of them - these are things the results of which you can see in that New Yorkers are living three years longer than the national average. We must be doing something right," Bloomberg said.

The mayor says obesity kills more than 5,000 New Yorkers every year.
